Pearl Gannon hasn't added a story.
After being reigned Ms. Wheelchair Illinois 2014 in March a turn of events caused my disability of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease to worsen, which then led to issues of me not being able to use my current vehicle as a safe mode of transportation to travel the state and talk about my platform. As Ms. Wheelchair Illinois I am reaching out to society in order to dispel myths and stigmas about those with disabilities to gain more understanding about the lives of the disabled, as well as helping those with disabilities develop ways to cope with their deteriorating disorders and/or the depression that can set in with having a disability. In order to help them achieve ideas for their own positive mental health I am introducing ideas such as adaptive sports, faith, support groups, friends, family, and "me" time--including pampering and stress relieving activities sugh as meditation. In order to accomplish these goals as Ms. Wheelchair Illinois, and be an active and independent part of society, I am needing a new minivan that will have hand controls and an automatic ramp. With the help of Mobility Works and the Department of Vocational Rehabilatation this will hopefully be a possibility...but I am on a deadline to raise the money! I have been driving with hand controls for some time now, but my ability to lift my manual chair is coming to a standstill, further hindering my ability to travel and do my speaking engagements. Also, my car itself is becoming a danger to drive with its age, mileage, and the repairs needed to fix it. If I wait too long I will no longer be able to safely drive and the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation will refuse to give me assistance. With your help I can continue on for the rest of my reign, and even after, to educate society and break barriers towards people with all sorts of disabilities, not just physical.
