Please help Derek with surgery expenses

Derek is one of the 3 in 1 million Americans suffering from Chronic Hereditary Pancreatitis. He has been battling the disease since he was 16 years old (he's 23 now) and is going from NY to Minnesota to have a total pancreatectomy and auto-islet cell transplantation. During the procedure, his pancreas, spleen and gall bladder will be removed and islet cells (removed from the pancreas) will then be transplanted into his liver. Chronic pancreatitis brings with it severe abdominal and back pain, among other complications. This surgery promises to relieve some of that. If Derek does not move forward with this surgery, he'll face increasing pain which would likely lead to dependence on narcotic drugs for pain management, an increased chance of developing pancreatic cancer, as well as a very good chance of developing diabetes.

He will need to stay in Minnesota for at least one month after surgery and will require round-the-clock care. His wife and mother will both spend time with him there, taking time off from work to care for him. Derek is newly married (September '14) and is just starting out. This surgery threatens to wreak havoc on his finances. There will be bills for lodging, airfare, food and health care. We're hoping you can spare a few dollars to help minimize this young couple's financial burden.  No amount is too small and all donations are appreciated.
