I am Elroy Brown Jr. Aka "Teacher Elroy". Currently I am an Early Childhood Education advocate and Prevention Initiative Teacher with Illinois Action for Children. I have a passion for initiating, revamping, and revising teaching practices in early childhood education, and culturally relevant curriculum, while committing the past 7 years in hands on experience implementing developmentally appropriate teaching practices, classroom management, developing lesson plans, child assessment and screening, and developing individualized instruction plans for children with identified special needs. I was also blessed to increase my knowledge base by undertaking 2 years of graduate studies at Arkansas State University in Early Childhood Services. It was during my studies that I learned some troubling statistics in the world of our youngest learners. The US Department of Education Office of Civil Rights (2014) reported that African American males are suspended more than any other racial group, beginning in preschool. I learned that the issues that usher young children directly into the "School-Prison Pipeline" in America, often begin with the lack of cultural responsive teaching practices and hinder healthy social and emotional development. These concerning statistics paired with my experiences of once being a young black child from an improvised community, and now currently working in low-income communities Was my catalyst to do something. In the spring of 2018, I began implementing a STEM based Agricultural Early Education curriculum activities, allowing 2-3 year-old children the opportunity to germinate, plant, care for, harvest, and even earn a profit from produce that the children themselves actually farmed! This was GROUNDBREAKING! (Pun intended)
Behaviors associated with social emotional delays are: extreme tantrums, defiance, hyper aggression, inability to focus and, social detachment. Having recorded the number of unwanted incidences in my class from the beginning of the project until harvest, I noticed that the overall emotional climate of my classroom improved drastically, allowing for more intentional learning that promotes healthy development across all the domains of learning.
As you may have concluded by now, this is REVOLUTIONARY! To me this project is important for a couple of reasons:
- We need agriculture to survive. If you eat, you need agriculture. If you wear clothes, you need agriculture. If you take medicine, live in a house or write with a pencil, you need agriculture. Agriculture is in every facet of life and we are helping 2 and 3 year-old children to learn self-sufficient survival skills through play.
- STEM-Agri play, could be recognized as an intervention tool, specifically with young black males with identified social and emotional and all other special needs.
SO HOW CAN YOU HELP?!
I am currently planning ahead for 7 months of curriculum activities, spanning from March-October. Although last season was successful, we lost a substantial amount of crop due to unpredictable weather patterns. Here is where YOU come in! I need your support to acquire $1,150 for the purchase of a Palram Essence Silver Hobby Greenhouse, to better control the climate and ventilation for the produce of the children and families served. No amount is too small! Even if you cannot offer monetary or in-kind support, just by sharing the cause plants a seed to help impact a community of young learners that will soon be our leaders!
