Jess bear hasn't added a story.
Kamil and Itir live in Southern Turkey, and for the last 20 years they have been rescuing cats and dogs from the streets and from abusive homes.
Their story began with a small number of dogs, and the strong
love for their first fur babies is what lead them to save more and
more cats and dogs that needed them, to the point of needing to move
to a rural area for their fur children to have the freedom and space
they deserve. Here, they can finally run, play, and be happy in peace.
It’s a place where cats and dogs live side by side and in harmony, and
unlike anything I’ve seen before.
This ranch is the home to dogs rescued from daily abuse and dog
fighting, cats who are blind, dogs tied in the forest and left to die,
puppies found alone on highways, and animals who have beaten cancer or
were found sick and close to death. Watching them become comfortable
and happy, and adapt to their new lives has been incredible to see,
and they quickly become indistinguishable from house cats and dogs.
After living with Kamil and Itir for 6 months, I can say that
they are amazing and selfless people, whose lives revolve around their
fur children, and doing everything to keep them happy and healthy. No
amount of work and no costs are great enough for them to give up on an
animal, whether or not they can really afford it. They have never
received or asked for money from any people or charity groups, despite
now having 35 dogs and over 70 cats. Every dollar goes towards
feeding, housing, toys, medicine, and vet bills for the fur children,
and this adds up to a lot given the large number of cats and dogs.
Renting a large enough property and paying the bills associated
with it is costly already, and on top of this, the dogs require 100kg
of chicken, and the cats eat 40kg of cat food per week. Spaying a cat
or dog can cost up to $130USD per animal, and these prices are
especially steep given the average wage in Turkey. In addition, given
the ongoing instability of Turkey and the country's uncertain future,
Kamil and Itir are hoping to move to Montenegro, to find a safer home
for themselves and their fur children. Moving their fur babies will be
extremely difficult and costly, but will bring them more freedom and
safety for the future, so that they can continue to help all their
cats and dogs.
Given their selflessness and the incredible number of cats and dogs they have saved, we want to help out these amazing people, who have sacrificed having a new home, travelling, or anything extravagant for themselves for 20 years, to instead give a good life to hundreds of animals in this time. They do this with no recognition or financial help, and their cats and dogs really are their children. They live with no separate spaces for people or animals at the ranch; their entire home, property and even their bedroom is 100% shared with cats and dogs 24/7, which of course is messy and stressful.
All money raised will go towards feeding the cats and dogs,
medication and vet bills, and the costs of moving their children out
of Turkey. Every dollar helps, and we appreciate anything you can
donate to help Kamil and Itir continue to change the lives of cats and
dogs that need them!
Thank you for reading,
Jess.
