Cambridge Street Upper School (CSUS) is a social justice school. Our entire staff attends weekly cultural proficiency seminars under the leadership of Principal Manuel Fernandez, and we strive to motivate our students to become agents of positive change in our community. Our 8th grade teaching team is especially committed to culturally sustaining pedagogy, and our social studies teacher has redesigned her curriculum to include culturally relevant units that connect historic events to current social justice issues.
Our social studies teacher designed a unit about the genocide of indigenous peoples in both Canada and the US, specifically focusing on the physical and psychological abuse generations of indigenous children endured at government-mandated residential schools. Scholars learned about the intergenerational trauma that Native Americans continue to suffer from today, and the ways this trauma manifests itself in widespread alcohol and drug abuse, as well as rampant domestic and sexual violence on many reservations. Students also examined the continued oppression of indigenous peoples by the US government, which continues to strip natives of their land. Native Americans are often victims of racial profiling and police brutality; on many reservations Native Americans do not have adequate housing, schools, or healthcare.
The 8th grade scholars at CSUS are appalled by the injustices indigenous people endure, and the lack of public awareness. They expressed their desire to “become allies to Native Americans” and “find a way to help raise awareness.” Our 8th grade teaching team reached out to renowned author and speaker, Larry Spotted Crow Mann, a member of the Nipmuc tribe of Massachusetts. He would love to come speak to the scholars at CSUS for a reasonable fee of $500. This would be an invaluable experience for our students who do not personally know any Native Americans.
We are asking for donations in order to bring in an outside resource so students are able to make relevant connections to what they are learning and discussing in school to the outside world and support them in being advocates for those that are marginalized.
