Runa Weidemann hasn't added a story.
The little village Medewi on Bali’s west coast is home to one of Bali’s longest surf breaks. It is also a part of the coast that every wet season is covered in the plastic waste being washed out in the ocean through rivers from inland villages.
Getting a grasp of everything that needs to be done in Bali to reduce the plastic problem is overwhelming. We need a trash collection system. And when the trash is collected it needs to go to a trash handling facility. The people need to see that if trash is put in a bin it will be collected, and through that see the point of putting trash in bins. We need to raise awareness about single use plastic. Today people use single portion bags and containers for shampoo, detergent, soap, daily coffee, water (200ml cups), candy and lots of other stuff that is consumed daily. And we need education about what happens with plastic in the ocean, how it doesn’t disappear and the threat it poses to marine life and ultimately to all life.
This project is organized by the Medewi Boardriders - a local board riders club including all the local surfers in Medewi - together with IN Surf Retreats who run surf camps in the area.
We want to do something in Medewi! We want to involve tourists and locals and raise awareness and responsibility with everyone who comes here to enjoy the ocean whether through surfing, fishing, diving, swimming or just watching the sunset from a plastic free beach.
What we want to do:
Handle the trash in the right way! The Medewi Boardriders
already organize beach cleanups every Sunday and now we want to
build on this. At the moment all trash collected is being burnt
locally as there is no rubbish collection system. We want to work
with a trash collecting company - we are still deciding on which one
- who will make sure as much as possible is recycled and the remains
are handled in the best way possible here.We will need to schedule
collection weekly or even better, twice a week. This will be our
biggest expense and the more funding we get, the longer we can keep
this up. The Medewi Boardriders are also working with the government
to get a system in place, but this is a long and complicated process
and we don't have time to wait.
We want to attract more people to the weekly clean ups! We want to make an incentive program for kids that includes education, trash collection, reusable water bottles and prizes for high participation. We want to spread information about the clean ups to the tourists in the area and urge them to participate. We also want to provide food and drinking water (water bottle refills!!) at the cleanups.
We want to get materials for the clean ups. Printed graphics that illustrate why we do what we do. A tent to use as a hub for the cleanups, for storing food, water and materials. And reusable trash collection bags.
We want to produce reusable water bottles and shopping bags for sale to support further developing and running of the cleanups.
