Silver Wheelers hasn't added a story.
The purpose of The Ryders Cycling Society of Canada, spearheaded and supported by Canadian professional cyclist, Ryder Hesjedal, is to create and sustain opportunities for young Canadians to ride bicycles. By doing so RCSC will support and expand the social benefits of cycling and the cyclist’s lifestyle. Those benefits include, but are not limited to: better individual health and fitness; enhanced environmental awareness and ecological impact; improved community cohesion; and greater economic sustainability.
This year the Ryders Cycling society has decided to fund two initiatives. We picked one local immediate need in funding a BMX program for disadvantaged youth, and also a regional program called iRide through cycling bc.
Our goal is to raise $10,000 for these initiatives. Below is a description of the impact of your fundraising dollars. We encourage you to pick a goal that will stretach your fundraising abilities, just like this ride will challenge your physical abilities.
IRide-fundraising Goal- $7500
$250 - Purchase 1 iRide Bicycle for Victoria the Fleet
$500 - Fund 1 Day of a 3-Day iRide In-School event at a Victoria school (2 coaches / access to bike fleet)

BMX
So this is the story of how this all started, and what was posted to
the BMX community.
.....A reach out to the BMX family and our community . A couple
weeks ago I brought a young guy out to the track that hangs out at the
skate park to try BMX. He loves the sport and has been coming by to
watch practices and races ever since so I asked him why he doesn't get
his parents to pick him up a bike and start racing.... Well I found
out that he lives in a group home and they just don't have the funds
nor does he want to be a burden on the people that have taken him in.
Sher and I have gotten to know him and he is a really nice kid and I
think an outlet and some positive friends will go a long way in
helping him continue moving on a positive track. Do you think between
all of us we have the parts to put together a race bike for him, or if
we could all donate a bit to buy one for him. He is 14 years old and
would prob. fit a pro frame. A full face helmet and maybe some gear as
well. I don't have a lot of extra cash but I can pay a bit for parts.
Thank You for your time and kindness.......
Well I was able to build him a bike and 2 other bikes and I have
frames and parts left over but missing other pieces so I slowly buy
parts when I can afford them or try get them donated. This started off
as just trying to help out one young man and developed into so much
more. The more bikes I can build the more kids I can help out. The BMX
family is such a great structured and rewarding place to be able to
help kids and after the bike is paid for is relatively in-expensive to
race locally. At $60 per year and $7 per race with free practices.
I see the progress in the young man that I am helping out and he
rides that bike like it was stolen with a smile from ear to ear. I
know I can't give a bike to every kid but my idea is to have bike
available at the track to try out and if the child is into it he can
sign the bike out for the year. The bike will be kept locked at our
track but when the track is open that child can ride his assigned bike
when ever he or she wants. We have a couple of social workers at our
track that know of kids that would benefit from a program like this.
The children we would be helping would not only learn how to ride and
race BMX but how to look after their bikes, maintain their bikes, and
clean their bikes.
It's funny the young guy I am helping out is at my house every 2
weeks when he gets paid from his part time job with a new part that he
wants to learn how to put on his bike. It is so great so see the passion.
I feel racing is a perfect outlet for kids in difficult
situations it teaches confidence and reward with hard work and dedication.
The Spokes BMX program was born from the passion of a concerned parent and advocate of BMX. Many of the cycling sports greatest athletes started with BMX.
Mission
The purpose of Spokes is to provide multiple avenues for at risk youth to grow in sport and life. Each spoke we offer builds together to make a wheel. When that wheel gains momentum and has inertia it will roll in healthy direction that will introduce and encourage a start in cycling, provide life skills to achieve their athletic and personal best, and to be contributing members to the local and global communities around them.
Vision
That all kids in Victoria BC will have access to learn, train, and race bmx, and decide to give back to the spokes program in both time and resources.
Program
1. Provide equipment (bike, helmet, pads, lock) that will allow motivated kids in need to have access to ride
-Kids will have the opportunity to apply to borrow equipment for 1 year time slots.
2. Provide funding for these same kids to join the BMX club, go to the weekly training, and ride the race season.
-Costs 60 dollars to join the club, and $10 per race, and there are 20 races a year.
-A bus pass to get to and from the training centre
-Travel money to get to the races.
3. Achieve the life skills. Those include but are not limited to financial (how to get jobs, saving, smart buying) motivation, goal setting, giving back to the local and global communities they are involved with.
-With each loaned set of equipment the borrower will go through a theory program that will provide eduction on the opportunity they have, the implications of keeping the equipment safe, seeing goals to purchase their own equipment, how and why to save (making sound financial decisions), why people give back to the community in a program like spokes, and how they can help.
CylingBC's iRide Schools Program has a vision for cycling in our province. To make that vision a reality, CyclingBC is making cycling as accessible as possible for students aged 6-16 by showing up at gym class with bicycles, helmets and champion coaches. iRide is FREE for all 1st year schools and focuses on:
1. Safety
2. Fun
3. Skill development through games & experiences
Serving as the 1st contact in a 5-part progression that can take students from the playground to the highest level of cycling they desire, iRide aims to create a fun and light first cycling experience.
iRide In-School provides 3 hrs of coaching for every participating student over a 3 day program. iRide's coaching staff share transportation safety skills, create a fun and enjoyable environment and provide a wide collection of stimulating drills for skill development. Created by CyclingBC Executive Director, Richard Wooles in 2008, the iRide program is coordinated by 2012 Canadian Champion, Ben Chaddock. In 2015, over 10,000 students across the province experienced iRide. Cycling BC is now looking to grow iRide's presence in Victoria.
iRide is made possible by parents, teachers and cycling enthusiasts like you.
