Hello there,
We are Anisha and Claire and have been working as qualified Occupational Therapists (OT) since graduating in 2010 from Bournemouth University!
Since qualifying, my dream (Anisha) has been to promote Occupational Therapy and work in my home country that is Nepal. Since the devastating Earthquake that hit Nepal in April 2015- it made me realise that life really is too short and that the skills and knowledge that I have gained throughout the years could be put into practice a lot sooner. Having discussed my plans with my dear friend and fellow OT Claire- she selflessly decided to come out and volunteer with me :)!
Having contacted the Association of Nepal's Occupational Therapists- they asked if we would be interested in volunteering at the SSDRC school in Kathmandu.
Special School for Disabled and Rehabilitation Centre (SSDRC) is a non-profitable and non-governmental charity that focuses on providing specialist education and rehabilitation services to children suffering from different kinds of disabilities. The school specialises in Autism.
Nepal is a country where learning disabilities is not fully understood by the people due to the lack of education and services provided. This centre is a wonderful example where these children are given a chance to learn the skills required to manage their activities of daily living and participate in classroom activities which in turn could potentially allow them to return to main stream schools and succeed in life more independently.
Though they have services to access a Physiotherapist, they have not been able to get an Occupational therapist to the school. Occupational Therapy is still very new to Nepal with only a handful of Therapists providing a service throughout the whole country.
Claire and I will be volunteering our OT services to the school completely on our own funds and with the money donated by you, we will be able to provide more resources such as a sensory room and hopefully set up an OT service that can be continued, once our time is over.
This is a great charity that really looks at each child as an individual and provides a holistic approach to their way of teaching. All the money donated will not only provide this school with the chance to gain more resources but to expand and hopefully take more children.
If you would like more details, then please visit the school website: http://www.ssdrc.org.np/ or contact me anishaale@hotmail.co.uk!
Thank you for your help!
