Mikarla Teague hasn't added a story.
For the past 4-5 years I have been proudly involved in
supporting the revolutionary work of the I Live Here Projects and
their education, creative arts and human rights programs in Malawi,
Africa. Their valuable work focuses on providing education to
transorm the lives of Malawi’s most vulnerable women and children.
I Live Here’s first school was opened in the Kachere Juvenile
Detention Center in 2009, fueled by the fundamental belief that
education could provide the young men with an avenue for freedom and
opportunity. Despite austere overcrowding and a challenging learning
environment owing to the fact that cells were being operated as
classrooms - ILH’s passionate teachers consequently inspired the
students to attend school.
Malawi sits amongst some of the highest-ranking illiteracy
rates in the world with a total adult literacy rate of 61.3% (UNICEF
Statistics| Malawi | 2008-2012*) Statistics drastically vary between
the male/ female quotas. Seeing a radical need for improvement and
change, I Live Here’s essential work provides an educational syllabus
utilizing the Malawian national curriculum, additionally integrating
art, creative writing and music, equipping these young men with a
strong and innovative educational background. Furthermore unlocking an
infinite catalyst of opportunity, providing these boys with the
possibility to pursue greater access to educational opportunities,
skill attainment, and positions of authority and principle within
their greater communities, and consequently; Nation – establishing
Malawi’s future doctors, lawyers, teachers etc.
I Live Here has recently expanded their projects to provide
quality education to women in Malawi's Maula prison, and are further
planning to open another school for women based in a newly built
girls’ reformatory in Mzuzu. The fundamental aim is to provide
education, equal rights opportunities, and female empowerment
programs. Because of the poverty and gender challenges in Malawi, vast
numbers of individuals are inhibited to ever receive a basic education.
Interestingly - Studies show that expanding the freedoms, education
and gender equality opportunities for women, holds the key to
kick-starting inclusive national development. Health and development
experts, non-governmental orgs and UN agencies agree, women are
Africa’s greatest untapped resource, holding the foundation for solid,
sustainable social development, equitable growth and better quality of life.
Education is freedom. Education is power.
I Live Here is led and directed by a group of powerful
individuals I have come to deeply care about. I sincerely believe in
their vision, and steadfastly endeavor to see this work continued
and expanded upon.
Please join me in furthering and supporting this evolutionary
work. Thank you deeply for your generosity and immeasurable support :)
