Juli Upshaw hasn't added a story.
Chance is a 12 week old purebred German Shepherd pup. At a very young age, he badly injured his back leg. Because he is so young, and the injury is very bad, this little pup needed help. Initially, vet's couldn't do much for Chance because of his age. It looked like he was in for a lifetime of physical therapy and surgeries and the expense of caring for his leg was going to be a huge burden for an adopter to take on.
Lucky Paws took him in to help him out. For 6 weeks, we've had Chance on "bed rest", which doesn't exist in a young pup's mind. At first, we thought he could have a simple surgery to fix his leg, but he has a unique situation. There aren't any cartilage or tendons holding Chance's knee together. It just dangles.
Vets have done x-rays and Chance takes medication to help the cartilage grow, but it hasn't helped and scar tissue continues to be a problem now.
Chance recently went to a specialist who has determined that his leg would probably never be used. Arthritis would definitely be a concern, as well as hip dysplasia because of the way he holds his leg. They also said his leg would probably shrink from not being used.
His leg could also cost thousands over his lifetime, since it's unknown how it will grow, as he grows. Rather than subjecting Chance to a life of pain from arthritis, scar tissue and hip dysplasia, we've decided to give him the best chance at being a normal shepherd, by having his back leg amputated. The surgery will be scheduled for 1 month from now, to give us time to raise the funds needed to help him.
Chance is such a trooper, and will be able to have a normal life. He wants to run and play, and this surgery will give him the freedom to do this.
Our local vet in Springfield, OR, Cascade Animal Clinic, will be performing the surgery when he's also neutered, so that he won't need to be put under anesthesia any other times. Chance will be ready for a forever home with a family that can provide a great home for him for the rest of his life.
Please help us give Chance the life he deserves. Every dollar helps, and if you're unable to make the minimum $10 donation here, you are always welcome to come into our store in Springfield, OR @ 675 W Centennial Blvd, where every penny donated toward Chance's surgery, goes directly to him. It is open Tue-Fri 11-4. Sorry it's not more, but we are ALL volunteers. A direct donation through Paypal will also accept any amount, and every dollar helps.
PLEASE SHARE his story, as it will take a village to help this guy. We love and greatly appreciate our local supporters but don't want to keep putting the burden on you alone. By sharing his story, we hope that others will also get involved as well.
We welcome questions and will happlily give updates to anyone wanting more information.
