Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
She came into the shelter yesterday afternoon unable to walk. She was a frosty faced doxie girl who did not have a lot of options for ways to leave the shelter. She sat alone in her shelter photo in pain and alone. We were her only shot.
There are two usually two reasons a doxie cannot walk - one is IVDD, the other is a broken pelvis. Both are complex and expensive. If we placed a hold, we were on the hook for one of them - both bad, both challenging to fund, with the broken pelvis being THE most expensive condition that we treat - with surgery, heavily discounted, running around $6,000.
The broken pelvis is not only the most expensive condition we treat, but it is the hardest to fundraise for as the dog "looks fine" - no visible injuries, no road rash, no cuts, no scrapes, nothing that you can see. We totally get it! It isn't anything that can be seen - there is no compelling emotional reason to donate. So we were between a rock and a hard place - IVDD Or broken pelvis. We weren't sure which, but we knew she needed out.
We placed our hold, and got a medical transport to Miami to get the little girl we named Trinity and she was on her way to LeadER on the gut feel we had that it was a pelvis/ortho vs. IVDD/neuro.
LeadER was alerted that the transport was incoming and were ready for her when Trinity arrived. They got her to the back, got her to x-ray, and the scans confirmed our hunch. It was our biggest challenge - Trinity's pelvis was broken in multiple places, likely hit bit a car.
She was started on fluids and pain meds, a soft bed and some good food to let the shock wear off and Trinity had her surgical consult with Dr. Daubs. She is surgical candidate and she was prepped and ready to do go to surgery when updated x-rays revealed some bruising on her lungs (all the more likely she had been HBC/hit by car) so the surgery was called off to give Trinity's lungs a chance to rest and heal a bit before putting her under anesthesia.
So here we are, back again, facing our biggest foe - the Broken Pelvis. You can't see it, Trinity doesn't look injured, but she has suffered significant injuries. YOU are what makes it possible for us to say "Yes" when we see a little girl who has nobody to come for her but us. Will you help us cover our most complex surgery to give her the chance she needs?
