Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
His photo went out from the shelter - A2350789 Needs rescue help ASAP... unable to walk, paralysis, spinal cord injury. His shelter blast photo shows a sweet little boy sitting in a bed, with his collar still on him, the telltale sign that he had a family before they dumped him at the shelter.
His medical records tell the story that he had been suffering for a while before his family abandoned him..."no deep pain, redness, irritated skin on scrotal area" (all which meant he had been dragging himself around for a while) with the records noting "in order to avoid suffering, humane euthanasia will be indicated".
He was labeled as a terrier mix and being diagnosed with no deep pain means that there is a much lower chance that he will recover. The clock was ticking on his life. This sweet little boy had lost his family and now was on the verge of loosing his life.
We so didn't need another urgent medical need, and even less so, a non-doxie- IVDD- no deep pain case that will not be adopted and nobody to foster if he didn't walk again (as we have two of those already), but we couldn't let him die.
We held our breath and placed our hold and (embarrassingly) danced in the streets when the rescue office came back and said another rescue had a hold.
The call came today that the other rescue HAD BACKED OUT. This little man could have had surgery LAST NIGHT when his chances would have been better than they were now, another 24 hours later. HOW DOES A RESCUE PLACE A HOLD ON AN IVDD DOG AND THEN BAIL?????
Did we still want him?
We were his only chance. It was DRSF or the end of the road for him.
We placed our hold.
The Pambulance made an unplanned trip to Miami go get him and the little man we have named Holcombe is now under the care of Dr. Wong at Southeast Veterinary Neurology.
We are so far out on a limb, it isn't even funny. We need to cover his care if we walks again or not which is a big enough challenge on its own. If he doesn't walk again, it is likely Holcombe will be with us for the rest of his life as placing a paralyzed dog is nearly impossible and there are only so many we can care for.
We are back again, to humbly ask your help to make two miracles - help us cover Holcombe's surgery, and help us find the words to inspire people to open their homes and hearts to IVDD survivors as we are very much in need of both at the moment. We hope you agree that he was worth the gamble and thank you in advance for help on either or both miracles!!
