Ballet Afrique hasn't added a story.
After 3 studio moves over 13 years, Ballet Afrique is so happy to find it's long-term home in the heart of downtown east Austin's Black Cultural District. Located at the corner of E. 11th and Waller, we are thrilled to be in east Austin, where our story began. Founder and director, China Smith, grew up on east Austin, and this relocation has been a homecoming, as well as call to action. We are striving to create a space for community that acts as a home to BIPOC children, artists, and leaders. We take pride in leading by example and paving a path that creates new and equal opportunities for our students and their families. Community is everything to us, and we have big plans to create a strong, wide, network of Austinites who believe in the value and importance of Black Arts. We are still in need of funding to finish out things like hanging mirrors, installing ballet bars, lighting, setting up IT in the lobby, and so much more. If you believe our students deserve a beautiful, safe home for their creative self expression, support us and make a donation today!
"East side was like my playground. ... It was very much community I depended on. For example, on East Eleventh, where Hillside Farmacy is, that used to be a restaurant called Gene's. It was New Orleans-based. Well, I would ride my bike past there, and he would feed me breakfast, because he knew I didn't have any money. I’m just a kid riding my bike. (It was) just people taking care of each other. Like, you don't have to ask.
What I loved about East Austin and our community, the thing that I loved the most, was that you used to see people sitting on their porches and you would wave. ... You drive by, walk past someone's house, and you wave. It was just an unspoken community that exists there."
Ballet Afrique is on a mission to change the landscape of Austin's performance art community. We are committed to ensuring that our current and future dancers have equal access to the city's performance spaces, production resources, and fiscal sponsorships. By setting new precedents and focusing on cultural equity, we can normalize equal access to a full, vibrant creative community. Join us and be a part of this important moment in Austin history by donating to the completion of our new space. We are still in need of funding to finish out things like hanging mirrors, installing ballet bars, lighting, setting up IT in the lobby, and so much more.
Your contribution will be contributing to the success and development of our dancer's futures. The physical, mental, and emotional health benefits of dancing are endless. Dance schools play an important – and often unrecognized – role with significant social and cultural benefits. By providing a realistic ladder of progression through the various stages of dance, students develop a healthy outlook on life and an overall community feeling of well-being and togetherness. Your donation makes you instrumental in reinforcing the support and belief in each dancer's personal goals and dreams.
