| Summary | A Fundraising Campaign for Emergency Actions Against Hunger during the Covid-19 pandemic in Brazil |
| Challenge | One year after the first case of Covid-19 in Brazil, the country has surpassed the mark of more than 400 thousand lives lost. More than 4.000 people are dying in a 24-hour period. In addition to the health crisis, Brazilians are also fighting hunger, poverty, and violence. A recent article from The New York Times published that 117 million people in Brazil are now food insecure, with 19 million in the past year going hungry. |
| Solution | As a contingency plan during the worst
humanitarian crisis of recent times in Brazil, Kilomba Collective
is joining an international movement to support Black Brazilians
who have been economically impacted by Covid-19. The campaign
called “There are Hungry People” is raising funds for actions
against hunger, misery, and violence during the Covid-19 pandemic. The campaign is organized by Black Coalition for Rights, Anistia Internacional Global Movement, Oxfam Brasil Organization, and other Brazilian organizations that mapped 22.895 families in vulnerable situations throughout the national territory who will benefit from this humanitarian action. |
| Long-Term Impact | The families mapped for this campaign
will receive food baskets according to the number of people in
their household during three months. The donations raised by
Kilomba Collective will be destined to those families, mostly
residing in Brazilian favelas, riverside communities, and Quilombos. Due to the currency of the dollar compared to the Brazilian real, every $190 (roughly R$1000) can help feed 4 families of 2 or to 4 people over three months. Our goal for this campaign is to raise $2000, but we count on you to support us and reach a total of $5.000, which will benefit over 100 Black Brazilian families during three months. |
