Dachshund Rescue South Florida hasn't added a story.
We sound like a broken record, but the dogs and their urgent medical needs are coming faster than we can keep up with them. Last week, we a local shelter reached out to us that they had a little guy who was surrendered for being paralyzed...he had been down for a while, had sores on his legs from dragging himself around and without rescue the shelter was going to put him down that day.
There was every reason in the world to say no. Any logical team in the world would have said no. He was a chi not a doxie, he was paralyzed and we didn't know if he was going to walk again. If he didn't walk again, he would likely be a forever foster as families are not lining up to take paralyzed dogs. We had thousands of dollars of unfunded care and at the very least, this little guy would need a MRI and would put us on the hook for at least a few thousand more. There was no reason to say yes. No was the safe answer. No was the smart answer. No was not our answer.
We got him pulled from the shelter and this little man earned the name Ozzy by his howling/singing in the car on the ride to Miami and SEVN. An MRI revealed his paralysis was not from IVDD, but could be one of three things - Cancer (cause someone always has to say cancer), a trauma, or an infection. We were already in for an MRI, but then needed a spinal tap to understand if it was an infection, so throw in the spinal tap too...we had already gone this far.
Ozzy was started on meds to combat inflammation and began physical therapy at SEVN and took to a cart they had there like a duck to water. Our worst case scenario has come true....we have a "likely forever paralyzed" dog, who is not a dachshund, who had an MRI AND A spinal tap. All of those things are our worst case scenario, but as challenging as they are, they don't over-rule the fact that Ozzy is alive.
We will continue fundraising (begging), and attempt to console our treasurer who has been crying into a bottle of wine since the hoarder dogs came in, but we will keep moving forward. Miracles only happen when you take a chance and don't do the safe thing. We haven't ever done the "safe thing" since we started our rescue journey and weren't about to start it with Ozzy's life. Will you help us make it possible to not have to do the safe thing and say no?
