Hello! We are the New York State Independent Living Council (NYSILC) - a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, non-governmental, consumer controlled organization.

We partner with more than Independent Living Centers across the state to promote self-sufficiency for people with varying disabilities.  This peer-based approach to assistance makes managing one’s own affairs obtainable though self-help instruction, self-advocacy skills, and regaining/maintaining independence in the community.

Our Leadership Development and Civic Engagement Program (LCDEP) is a new initiative aimed at taking this idea a step further by creating, enabling, and encouraging leadership and civic engagement opportunities for New Yorkers with disabilities.

Traditionally, those with disabilities find themselves needing to fight for accessibility, fair employment practices, social/recreational opportunities, and other civil rights.

We will educate and inform these individuals to become more civically engaged.  This can mean learning how to become a poll worker, serving on community boards, running for public office, and seeking not simply employment but managerial, supervisory, and other leadership roles.  The LDCEP will be FREE to participating members, including New Yorkers with disabilities (peers) and friends.

This way, people with disabilities can effect change and protect essential rights from within the system, making decisions on their own behalf (and for their peers) that will benefit the whole community. This peer network is an important step toward building a cohesive, politically active community with strong leadership among New York’s largest minority.

The money we raise will be used to support the development of podcasts, PowerPoints, and other resources for when the LDCEP goes live in January 2018.

Please donate whatever you can to empower New Yorkers with disabilities and support their full participation in all aspects of civic and community life.

Thank you so much!
