Jodie Arthure hasn't added a story.
My name is Jodie Arthure and last month I was lucky enough to be able to spend some time in Nepal with my husband. We joined a group of trekkers and journeyed on foot along the Anapurna Circuit during which time we passed through fantastic scenery and spent time with some incredible people living in close knit communities in both rural / isolated areas and also Kathmandu and Pokhara.
Our trek passed directly through the area that has been completely devastated by the earthquake that occurred on the 26th of April, and we have yet to hear from some of the guides and porters that we met and became friends with during our stay.
This terrible disaster follows a freak snowfall event that we witnessed during our trip in March which saw the area being hit by the worst snowfall that they have experienced in 18 years. The snowfall left us stranded for days, caused extreme distruption, saw communities completely cut off and prevented much needed tourism, severing cash flow to those that need it the most. The area was only just recovering from the impact of two internationally reported disasters that occurred during peak trekking season in 2014.
The earthquake has spurred many international fund raising campaigns with attention focused on efforts in and around the Kathmandu area. Pokhara was also reduced to rubble. More information can be found at http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2015/04/powerful-earthquake-hits-nepal-150425063918183.html
Unfortunatly although aid is being sent, some planes are being turned back due to limited capacity at Kathmandu Airport. In a bid to help my friends as much as I possibly can and their smaller communities, I am attempting to raise as much money as I can to send directly to the much loved communities that I was so lucky to visit, to help the people I met rebuild their homes and businesses so that they can once again welcome tourists with open arms.
I shall be competing in a number of events over coming months including my very first Triathalon (those who know me know what a deal this is...fear of water...), some 10k races the first of which is Bristol 10K in May and Tough Mudder in August so far confirmed. I am also planning to do a half marathon towards the end of the season and start training for a marathon next year. I will now be using these events to kick start my fundraising for this cause.
The money I raise initially will be sent to CARE International (charity no. 292506)who are currently working in the field distributing emergency supplies including family and hygiene kits. As they are purchasing at a local level and in bulk donations are able to go further than through individual efforts.
I am also working to send funds through my contact at Himalayan Encounters whose staff, guides and porters have been affected by the disaster. I want to help them and their families rebuild their lives. I will work with Himalayan Encounters to ensure that the money goes directly to the people who made our time in Nepal so special.
