Patti Olesen hasn't added a story.
We are beyond honored to be chosen by the Anderson Police Department K9 Unit as their choice of Fundraising Organization. Officer Jarrett has been a long time friend to us here at Vest Indiana K9s. All of you that have been with us from the beginning know the sad and very emotional story of K9's Magnum and Kilo of the Anderson PD. Both killed in the Line of Duty just weeks apart. So many things changed for the handlers and for the public with the death of these K9s. IT brought a community together but also made their K9 Unit Stronger! When Matt asked to have my organization put into his proposal to the Chief and Board as part of their fundraising tools to acquire K9 Jax I said YES immediately. The Following is a formal letter to me and the Organization and his note about K-9 Jax.
Dear Mrs. Olesen:
My name is Officer Matt Jarrett. I am a full time police officer with the Anderson Police Department assigned to the K-9 Division. I graduated from Ball State in 1996 with an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice. After I graduated from Ball State I pursued my dream of becoming a police officer by becoming a reserve on the Edgewood Police Department. I worked on the Edgewood Police Department for two years before becoming a full time patrolman at the Elwood Police Department in 2000. While I was at Elwood Police Department I moved up in the ranks as lieutenant. In 2002 I was assigned to the K-9 division where I worked my first k-9 partner, Fedor. Fedor was a dual-purpose narcotics detecting malinois. Fedor was purchased from Vohne Liche Kennels where we graduated from basic class. I worked with him until 2008 when I became a member of the Anderson Police Department. In 2010 I fulfilled a life- long dream and became a member of the Anderson Police Department K-9 Unit. I then began raising money to purchase my next k-9 partner, Magnum. Magnum was also a malinois, dual-purpose narcotics dog. After completing around 200 hours of in house training Magnum and I were certified through the North American Police Working Dog Association. We were partners (best friends) until 2012 when he was shot in the line of duty while chasing a bank robbery suspect. Currently, I am assigned to a dual- purpose malinois named Duke. After completing around 200 hours of in house training Duke and I were certified through the North American Police Working Dog Association. In recent years, there has been need for a dual-purpose, explosive detection k-9 in the City of Anderson. We are raising funds to purchase a k-9 from Vohne Liche Kennels, named Jax. Jax is a one year old Dutch Shepherd that will be trained as a dual-purpose explosive detection k-9. Jax and I will attend an explosive certification school at Vohne Liche Kennels before coming home to complete our training to be certified through North American Police Working Dog Association. Currently we are looking to raise funds to purchase Jax and to pay for the certification school through Vohne Liche Kennels, but we also need to purchase k-9 equipment. The equipment we are looking to raise funds for is a Garmin Pro 550 Electronic training collar and a Scent Logix explosive detection scent kit. This equipment will help us maintain our high level of training standards set by the Anderson Police Department. Thank you in advance for all of your help and support of our K-9 unit. Matt Jarrett
Matt's note to me about Jax:
K-9 Jax is a one year old Dutch Shepherd that was born in Poland and imported to the United States from Vohne Liche Kennels Europe to Vohne Liche Kennels in Denver, Indiana. At this time K-9 Jax is in being imprinted on explosive odors at Vohne Liche Kennels to become a dual purpose explosive detection k-9. We selected K-9 Jax to become a member of the Anderson Police Department K-9 Unit after going to two kennels and tested several k-9’s. K-9 Jax, who was named Harry, was the only K-9 to pass all of our tests at a high level. K-9 Jax is social, focused, confident, and possess all the right drives to make a great police K-9. On 03/30/15 I will pick up Jax from VLK and bring him home for a week to bond with him. After a week we will return to VLK on 04/06/15 to complete a three week single purpose explosive class. Once we complete the class, we will return home to complete three more weeks of in house training before certifying thru North American Police Working Dog Association. After certification is complete we will be assigned to day shift where the team will be available for any type of bomb threat to schools, government buildings, businesses, or any other types of structures. This will be the first explosive detection K-9 the Anderson Police Department has ever had. At this time Madison County only has one other law enforcement explosive detection K-9, K-9 Lars with the sheriff’s department. By adding another explosive detection K-9 it will help preserve the safety and security to the citizens of the City of Anderson and Madison County.
