Ken Baillie hasn't added a story.
Ken Baillie is 66 years old, he is married to his wife Leonie and together they have three children and three grandchildren. Ken has been active his whole life until his world changed 13 years ago. Ken underwent was what supposed to be a normal surgery which turned into a nightmare.
In 2002 Ken was advised to undergo a total knee reconstruction on his left knee. Upon his release from hospital his knee was the size of a soccer ball and was diagnosed with Golden Staph a bacterium found in the skin that results in infection.
In 2003 Ken consulted a different Othapedic Surgen who took out all the prostheic out of the leg and replaced it with new ones. Ken was in a great deal of pain.
In 2004 Ken had another revision which did not heal the Golden Staph and every day for the next three years Ken struggled to live a normal life. Between 2004 and 2007 Ken underwent a number of surgeries to try and beat the Golden Staph and ultimately resulted in a long term hospital care at Wakefield Hospital.
In February 2007 Ken underwent a 6 hour operation and the Golden Staph was back with vegence. Ken underwent excruciating pain and was let go from his job. In November 2007 Ken was finally forced to make the decision to amputate his leg.
Ken and his family underwent significant emtoional stress and underwent great lifestyle changes due to the loss of his leg. Ken refused social functions and Ken was ultimately told by his doctor that his lifestyle would not get any better and he would be stuck in a wheelchair.
Ken continued to look for other options and finally their Prayers had been answered. Leonie discovered a 'miracle story' in the Sunday Mail about Osseointegration performed by Prof. Munjed Al Maderis, a former Iraqi refugee who has become one highly sought Orthopaedic Surgeon putting back legs to amputees during the war.
Ken and his wife flew to Sydney in April 2014 to meet Prof. Maderis and see if whether or not he could help Ken walk again. After consultation Ken was told that he was ideal for the program he was offering because he could improve his quality of life and get him out of his wheelchair and back on his feet.
In June 2014 Prof. Maderis performed the first surgery. Involved putting a titanium rod to his femer near his hip bone.
Ken returned in August where he received his second operation putting a kepling onto the titanium rod and finally Ken's physiotherapist attached a prosthetic leg to him and Ken finally learnt to walk again.
Ken now has a prosthetic leg and for the first time since his initial operation back in 2002 Ken was pain free. It was also the very first time his three grandchildren in their life they had seen their poppa walk.
Ken's leg is a loan leg. It costs a minimum of $45,000. The doctors fees are $30,000.
Ken does not have the financial capacity to pay for the leg or the operation and he is appealing to you to help him walk again.
