jessica oulton hasn't added a story.
Only 1 short month ago my little cousin Daniela aka Dee, was informed she had a very aggressive breast cancer.
Her February consisted of bone scans, heart scans, exrays, ultrasounds, blood tests, MRIs, cat scans and 3 mammograms. Today (Feb 26th) she started step 1 of treatment with surgery...
- "All done! surgery went well..until i got out and got a hematoma, basically a blood clot by my arm pit where they took my lymph node, so guess what...goin back into surgery tonight.!! lol just my luck, but watchin t.v with family and having some laughs..feelin good!" Dee, Feb 26th.
You need a sense of humour to face cancer as a young person! As you can tell by her update today, she has an awesome one.
Here's a couple more quotes from her during the past month.
- "24K people get diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Canada. Only 4% are under the age of 40. The risk of being diagnosed under the age of 50 is 0.2 %! And I don't even have breast cancer in my family. Did I also mention I am deathly allergic to lettuce! lol. Anaphylactic shock put me in the hospital twice. When life throws you lemons..you make lemonade! Can't help but laugh about my luck sometimes...after all, laughter is the medicine! Just gotta keep rolling with the punches..one day at a time. Thats why life's so exciting!
- "I'm soo ready to beat the crap out of this cancer!"
- "Fundraising idea - everyone donates a dollar every time my breasts get touched by a different person.lol. seriously I'm at about 10 by now."
- "As I embark on these uncharted waters, I take one glance back at the comfort of my old life. I shed only one tear and look forward to nothing but clear skies. For it is through this adventure that I will find my most powerful inner strength and emerge victorious. I am a woman, I am a fighter, and I am a cancer survivor. You may knock me down but you will not knock me out."
Young adults have unique financial, social and medical challenges to face:
- Financially - young adults may not have secure jobs, benefit packages, savings and may have student loans. EI wll pay for only 15 weeks although treatment often lasts up to a year. Fertility treatments cost money even when subsidized and although CHEMO drugs are paid for by provincial health plans, many other drugs are not covered and tend to be very expensive.
- Socially - young adults may not have family close by and friends can not take time off work to help a non family member. Support groups are full of older people so it is easy for a young person to become isolated in their cancer battle.
- Medically - because cancer, such as Breast cancer in young women is often very aggressive their treatment will be very harsh and last much longer . There is no possible way that Dee will be able to work while in treatment.
Dee has a battle plan. She trusts her medical team. She believes she is going to make it and she laughs a lot. Still she needs our help financially.
I have absolutley no doubt that her amazing spirit will get her through the year emotionally and physically. $7800 is what she will need to get through the year financially (that's on top of all the help from the government, heath coverage and parents)
If everyone who reads this donates just $10 and vows to pass it on and get just one more person to donate $10 Dee can spend the year concentrating on keeping that awesome smile on her face all year long!
