Emily Burr hasn't added a story.
The picture above is of Sophy, my Peace Corps host “mother”, standing outside the new Bochabelo Drop-in Centre. Sophy is the Supervisor of the Centre and has been working to get a decent, clean, safe place for the orphans and vulnerable children of Bochabelo to go after school. She has obtained village land from the tribal chief and when we arrived 2 1/2 years ago she had a fence around the land and a pile of bricks that had been donated. These sat for a long time with no visible progress. During this time Sophy was working to get more donations of material since her budget for running the Drop-in Centre has no room for “saving” for the new building.
Then a month or two ago Sophy was able to start the work on the building. She had found local donations of cement and window and door frames. She also has people willing to donate their labor once the materials are there. She needs about $1,700 more in materials to complete the building. (See budget at the bottom.)
There are many reasons why this new Centre is needed. The Drop-in Centre is currently held in a small space behind a “tuck shop”, a small village store. (picture below)
If it rains, the children have to gather in this little room with one small window.
Another reason to change the location of the center is the the distance of the current center from the school. In the picture below you can see the back of the tuck shop on the right and on the far left you can just see the roof of one of the school buildings.
However, the main reason for the new building is the safety and security of the children. The current location has no fencing. It is a place of business where anyone can come or go. The grounds are not designed for children. There is a dangerous pit, used to burn trash at the edge of their play area.
The new site has fencing to keep little ones in and inappropriate people out. It has been designed with children in mind. It is right next to the primary school, (note closeness of school building in the picture below) which is great for the children and also means that the security guard at the school can keep an eye on the center when it is not being used.
The new center will also be available for other groups in in the mornings and on weekends when the children do not need it. There will be a large room for the children in case of rain that can be used for meetings and community groups at those times. The village currently has no meeting space for neighborhood groups except the school.
I hope you can find a few dollars in your budget to help the poorer children of Bochabelo have a safe place created especially for them.
At current exchange rates one US dollar is equal to about ten rand. $1 = R10
