Holly's Hope hasn't added a story.
Holly's Hope, is stepping up to assist Tyson N' Friends in their determination to save little Ducky and give her a rewarding and full life. (As you navigate through her story, please be aware that she is now in the care of Tyson N' Friends - who will ensure her safety while we raise funds)
Founded in 2012, Holly's Hope was inspired by a rescued doberman named Holly. She was one of those special dogs who changed lives - especially mine. When she passed away at 11.5 yrs old, Holly's Hope was founded in her name to raise funds for animals in need. Since its inception, we have raised funds annually for 10 Ontario Farm Sanctuaries, SBF Primate Sanctuary , Pilots N' Paws (PNPC Wings of Canadian Rescue), IFAW's Northern Dogs Project, Toronto Animal Services, individual animals in need and NOW, we are COMPELLED to raise money for a little pup who needs a lot of care - DUCKY.
WHO IS DUCKY? ....and WHY does She need our help?
Ducky is the unfortunate product of backyard breeding.
"Puppies For Sale" on Kijiji. She was bought - and it was obvious she was broken.
You see, Ducky is incontinent. Her last few vertebrae (similar to the human tailbone) are fused together. She has a dead tail - permanently kinked at a 90 degree angle to the left. It is a mere 1/2 the size it should be. It does not bend, wiggle, wag or flop. In fact, the only way you can tell that Ducky is a happy puppy, is by reading her body language from her front end. Her backend tires easily, Her back legs flop and cross. When she runs, Her back legs move together - simultaneously - sort of like a bunny. Her urine and feces leak constantly, and she has no idea it’s even happening.
The WHY is somewhat of a mystery. One specialist suggested that Ducky is having to deal with all the defects from "improper breeding", while another doctor suggested this was the result of a trauma. (perhaps a tail being pulled) - in any case, Ducky's buyer reached out to a number of rescues to take over caring for Ducky - those rescues suggested euthanasia due to her breed, young age and unknown medical issues. That's when Tyson N' Friends received a call asking if they would take in a "paralyzed puppy".
Upon meeting the puppy 3 weeks ago, it was very obvious to the team at Tyson N' Friends that Ducky was not paralyzed, but something was definitely not working correctly. They took her in and the road to healing has started here.
Ashley Heath Van-Delft of Tyson N' Friends, observes that, despite her disability, Ducky acts like a completely normal puppy. She’s a sassy redhead who demands to say hello to everyone and everything she meets along her way. She’s made tons of friends already during her short stay with us thus far and she leaves a lasting impression.
This being said, she will be a difficult case to adopt due to special needs. The diaper changing will likely be a lifelong commitment. So...WHAT CAN WE DO?
WE are going to help her have the life she deserves . We are going to raise the funds for her surgery! She is very fortunate to have Tyson N' Friends in her corner, but endless funds for surgeries are not something at a rescue organization's disposal.
WHAT THE DOCTORS SAY:
Ducky has seen two different doctors and two different specialists. Tyson N' Friends working on her behalf with the medical specialists, are being thorough while remaining as minimally invasive as possible, to try and find answers. Currently, Ducky's vet bills have amounted to a very modest $850 which have been paid in full by Tyson N' Friends.
The next steps required are an MRI and possible Spinal tap. If the MRI proves successful in providing answers to Ducky’s diagnosis, that would be the best case scenario! (The doctor is going to read her results live while she’s under anesthetic.) If the MRI reveals nothing, spinal fluid will be collected from the nape of her neck. This fluid will help indicate if there are any underlying, hidden bacteria which may be causing more internal damage than we may, or may not be aware of. It has been confirmed with each doctor that this will not be an easy case. They all wish they had better information for us. Meanwhile, We await her blood results - which should arrive shortly.
Once the blood results are in, her MRI (and possible spinal tap) will be scheduled within the upcoming days. There are no wait times for this test at this hospital - which is very welcome news!
For Ducky's treatments - and a chance at a normal life - It seems that $4200 is our target. (This total includes Fundrzr's admin fees for allowing us this fabulous platform). If we can raise more, the additional funds will be donated to Tyson N' Friends for ongoing costs (including Ducky's Diapers)
Let's show Ducky and the people who believe his life is worth living, that our community - who love dogs and appreciate the rescues who endeavor to save them - will step up to collectively ease the financial burden.
I am asking that we all contribute what we can - and if we cannot, please share this campaign far and wide. I am certain we can do this and i feel compelled to help Ducky - a little dog who, through no fault of her own, was either abused BY birth, or abused after birth. She (and her rescuers), deserve our help. I know how much your gift will be appreciated.
JUST A FEW MORE FACTS ABOUT DUCKY:
Ducky loves to sit outside and just bask in the fresh air.
She chases bugs.
Barks loudly in contentment when she rolls in the grass.
She knows how to “sit” and “come.”
She travels in the car amazingly.
Wears her diapers without fuss.
LOVES to play in/with water.
Her floppy ears are adorable and she’s remembered everywhere she goes.
ABOUT TYSON N' FRIENDS:
Tyson N Friends was founded by Brian Ferreria, whose inspiration to rescue (just like Holly's Hope), came from one of those special dogs who changes lives, and his name was Tyson. He was an American Staffordshire Terrier who, 18 years ago, took the family down a path of love, pit bull advocacy, and dog rescue. In Brian's own words, "...he made me realize what a loving life is about." Tyson's legacy has been a drive to save lives and give a voice to the pups who are shunned simply because of their looks. Tyson N Friends is a non profit rescue organization giving dogs a second chance at finding a forever loving home. It is owned and operated by Brian and a great circle of volunteers and animal advocates - all working in their spare time to save lives, bring back health and to re-home rescue dogs. (They rescue any breed who needs a home)
