Unlike digital clocks, grandfather clocks are more complicated and require a certain level of maintenance and care. They are not just devices that would help you to never be late again, but also, they are valuable treasures that can be kept in the family for a very long time as long as they are maintained well. Here are some tips that would help your grandfather clock live longer.
1. Make sure to position the clock on a flat and level surface.
Grandfather clocks are made to be placed on flat surfaces. A grandfather clock has pendulums and weights that make it work. If the clock is tilted, there would be more pressure on one side of the device and some parts would be damaged because of the stress. For the same reason, you need to maintain the weight alignment of the clock.
2. Do not let it sit on your storage for too long.
The metal parts of the clock would become brittle when it has not been running for a month or so. And, it might be quite difficult to find replacements for some that have been manufactured long time ago.
3. Have it serviced regularly.
It does not mean that you have to take it to people who make clocks repair every year. Grandfather clocks are designed to last long. But, having it checked every ten years would help it endure more wear and tear. Some parts that are hidden would be too difficult for an unexperienced one to oil and clean. You would need to have professionals deal with it to avoid damaging the precious clock.
4. Protect it from heat and moist.
Because a grandfather clock has a lot of metal parts, very high temperatures and very humid air would make it rust easily. Make sure that there is enough ventilation in the room where you are putting your clock. If possible, do not put it where sunlight would hit it directly.
5. Do not move the hour hand when setting the time.
Stop the pendulum, first and foremost, before even touching the minute hand to adjust the time. Do it carefully as not to touch the hour hand with your finger. After you have set it to the desired time, push the pendulum softly let the clock start ticking again.
6. Wind it the right way.
If the clock comes with a key, gently turn the key until it stops. When you feel resistance, do not force the key to turn. It could just mean that the clock is already fully wound. If the clock winds with chains, gently pull the chains one at a time until the weights are beneath the face of the clock. When your clock stops working for some reason, unless you are an expert, do not make attempts to fix it. Take it to a specialist to make sure that the damage would not get worse.
