As some of you will know, I work very closely with Geraint as one of his two to one staff. Geraint suffered an asthma attack in January 2014 which could not be brought under control. He had a cardiac arrest and consequently acquired a significant brain injury which turned Geraint's world upside down.
Since the event, Geraint made amazing progress at the Children's Trust in Tadworth and has continued to amaze us all since he started in Heronsbridge School in November last year.
This week, Geraint completed a challenge that he set himself. He wanted to walk 1500 steps in his pacer (a walking aid) by Christmas. He smashed this target this week and we are all ecstatic for him.
Geraint continues to make progress despite the daily battles that he faces. He sufferers horrendously painful spasms which causes his whole body to seize up. Sometimes thse spasms come one after another all day. He has had difficulty recovering his speech which leaves him frustrated everyday as he can't always communicate his wants and needs. Geraint's cognitive ability is currently being assessed but we know that he remembers his life before his asthma attack which is a double edged sword.
Despite all the battles and inconveniences Geraint faces everyday, he soldiers on. He is rarely seen without a smile on his face and he has the most wicked sense of humour. He has the most wonderful family who are incredibly strong despite their lives being changed forever.
No-one really knows what the future holds for Geraint or how far he will progress. The progress he has made so far is amazing and he makes us all incredibly proud every day. To ensure that Geraint can access any opportunity that comes his way to help him progress, there has been various fundraising events since Geraint's asthma attack. Geraint and his family are hugely grateful for all the sponsorships and fundraising. The money raised goes to his trust fund and goes towards any equipment he may need, private therapies and the next goal is to send him to the USA for stem cell therapy after he turns 18.
I have been wanting to do a race to raise money for Geraint for a while and when I mentioned it to Geraint, he shouted "and me!"
Geraint is doing the Boxing Day Porthcawl Lions 7KM fun run with me pushing him as I run and he is hoping to get some sponsors for his trust fund. This boy is truly remarkable and so deserves the support!
Every little helps!
Thank you for your support.
