Help for Phelps
Phelps was born Aug. 24, 2013. He & his 5 siblings were born with Puppy Swimmers Syndrome. Swimmers have flat bodies, almost like a turtle, & their legs stick out straight making it impossible to walk. Their internal organs are also at risk because there is no room for them to grow. Phelps was the healthiest of them all & he had a little bit of a round belly. He could also walk. Thankfully he was spared. His foster, Dana, worked with him to improve his leg flexability. They did pool therapy two times a day. After a month or so, Phelps was ready to find his Forever Family. In comes Alicia. She loved Phelps from the moment she saw him. He became an instant success with her kids. Brenden & Madison. They all love Phelps so much. Everything was perfect. Until recently, when Alicia noticed he was limping. They took Phelps to the vet & were told it was just growing pains. Weeks later, another trip to the vet, same diagnosis. Next step, Orthopedic Surgeon. New diagnosis & not a good one. He has premature closure of his growth plates, radial head subluxation, as well as panosteitis, which is causing him great pain. Phelps left leg is not growing correctly. One bone is growing but the other is not. This is causing his paw to turn outward & is effecting his walking. He is starting to not use that leg as much. The Orthopedic Surgeon says Phelps is in dire need of a surgery to correct this problem. This surgery has a price tag of $4000. His only other option is to live in pain & not use his leg. He's been through so much. He is a survivor. We need to fight to keep him going.
