Sato Elementary, Celena Rosenberger hasn't added a story.
My name is Celena Rosenberger and I currently teach 5th grade at Bethany Elementary School. This grant is written for Sato Elementary, which is a new school, in Beaverton that will open up fall of 2017. This community serves a variety of students with diverse backgrounds. Sato will focus on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math) based learning. Highly qualified teachers at this location will execute the unit. We are also in the process of collecting materials for a Maker Space that will be built in the summer and fall.
If funded, the Ozobots will improve/enhance student learning because students will be receiving direct instruction, not only in the standards, but also in engineering and design and coding. With the robots, teams of students could collaborate and test instead of having the teacher demonstrate with only one per class. Math and logic skills would be taught in hands-on ways to solve real problems.
We hope that the students will become successful computer coders through block coding and refining math measurement skills, problem solvers that can collaborate with peers, be able to apply the engineering and design steps in other aspects of their life all while participating in engaging hands on 21st century skills. We will do this by covering all of the following standards that are in the attachment below.
Standards Supported: Science
3-5-ETS1-1. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
3-5-ETS1-2. Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.
3-5-ETS1-3. Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.
Math:
5.MD.G Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system.
5.MD.H Represent and interpret data.
The evidence that we will be looking for in the students when the unit is completed are:
* The ability to write and execute a code that allows their Ozobot to navigate through a student created maze (this will also include measurement skills)
*Be able to tell the engineer and design process from beginning to end (this will be done through a pre/post test that the students will be given on Canvas)
*Work successfully with a partner or group of students to complete one of the Ozobot challenges
The following materials will be purchased for Sato Fall 2017.

The classroom kit includes: 18 Ozobots, 18 clear skins, 3 multi-port chargers, 18 sets of color code markers, 18 Ozocode sheets, teacher guide, Ozobot tip sheet, OzoBlockly get started sheet, Ozobots storage box, Log sheet, Bowling challenge with bowling pins, poster, and classroom

This project is supported by the Beaverton Education Foundation.
Founded in 1988, the Beaverton Education Foundation raises money to provide hands-on innovative academic enrichment and advancement programs & projects that go beyond normal school funding at all Beaverton public schools and is a 501(c)(3) community-based nonprofit organization. BEF mobilizes community resources to fund innovative classroom, summer and after-school programs.
In the event that this project does not reach its goal, BEF may apply the funds received to another project in need.
