Mikala Condon hasn't added a story.
Hi guys, it’s me, Mikala! Time to tell you a story about how fundraising for this amazing cause originally began...
5 years ago I was working at a bar when the manager approached me with a challenge that I couldn’t say no to. Train boxing for 3 months, raise money for a youth outreach program through Eastside boxing and then fight in front of hundreds of people.
Those who know me well know that when it comes to a challenge of toughness, and performance (I love a good show!) my tush gets up and rises to the occasion to show everyone that I’m the baddest B*tch in town.
Now take in mind this was my 24 year old self...
So, I came out of the gates hard, I trained and I raised money for a program I knew little about.
When it came time to sparring I got in the ring and I had no idea what I was getting into. I was hit multiple times, had no defensive skills and was on the brink of tears by the time the 1st round was over. My ego pushed me to stay in for another round, and this time I chose to punch back as hard as I could so as to hopefully knock my opponent out... hopefully. Instead, I tore my rotator cuff throwing uncontrolled heigh makers... ouch.
The coaches were encouraging, and told me to take rest and understood I could no longer participate. That was the end of boxing for me... 3 weeks before fight night... game over.
A year later I became a personal trainer. I had been so inspired by what the coaches at Eastside Boxing were doing that I decided to take a leap and change careers from getting people liquored up and full of food, to getting them fit and full of pride. Since then I have taught hundreds of people and filled my heart up with all of their strength.
I ran into coach Dave soon after getting certified and begged to come volunteer with the youth program at ESB. I knew I wanted to give back to my community and I finally had a way to do it. A month later, I began teaching conditioning classes in the after school program 1 day a week. It brought me so much joy to see these kids flourishing in a safe environment.
The program wasn’t just about training, it was about creating opportunities. Nurses, youth workers, nutritionists, sports physiotherapists, dentists, councillors, tutors , mentors and many more people have been brought in by this program to give these kids all the opportunities that a child/teen deserves to have. What we raise money for is beyond my comprehension... these opportunities are ripples in society and truly change the world.
I volunteered my time for 2 special years with those great kids and now I’m asking you to help me raise money as I train to get in the ring again. I checked my ego at the door long ago and plan to train with my heart instead of my head. Here is your opportunity to help me make ripples. Xoxo
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2019
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise $2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
