Orchid and Otto’s Story
Orchid
Nathan, Critter Care’s Animal Care Supervisor, was assigned to her care, a task he took to with great passion, nurturing his new charge. As the little otter grew, she revealed a lovely playful personality, ever ready to nip the hand that fed her. Nathan named her Orchid. After two months, Orchid was moved from Nathan’s little Otter Nursery to the outside Otter residence. There she was introduced to water, using a small children’s pool. At first, she was quite timid, but soon discovered that she loved to swim (just like an otter should) and was as comfortable in the water as on land! She happily made new friends with Oakley, and Orca, two other orphaned river otters that found their way to Critter Care, although Orca, the eldest and largest, had to be given supervised play dates due to her much larger size. None-the-less all three spent the summer happily playing and thriving in their new home! | Otto
Staff named the male otter Otto and quickly went about the task of caring for him, ever-concerned about his ability to recover. They kept him in isolation, due to his size and injury, and Nathan, Critter Care’s Animal Care Supervisor, kept a constant eye on him, wishing and willing him to recovery. Weeks later, as a result of this loving care and multiple Veterinary visits, the little warrior was on the mend, with his nose significantly healed and his weight increased. Finally, the exciting day arrived when staff were able to introduce young Otto to his potential new Otter friends as part of the next step in his rehabilitation. Happily he responded with true playful, curious and resilient otter behaviour, quickly bonding with his new friends.

| Since then...
Orca and Oakley were successfully released, exhibiting the skills and stamina needed to survive. We at Critter Care truly miss them, but stand by our mission to send our charges back to the wild where they are free and happy as intended. Orchid remains a playful, cheeky, fun loving, and major attention seeker, while Otto has inspired Critter Care staff by showing the strong spirit and determination to overcome his disability and become the magnificent, skilled river otter he is today! The pair have become inseparable, wrestling, chasing and diving together in the big pool at Critter Care as they add body weight and gain strength over the Winter. | . . .
