Lucy Skinner hasn't added a story.
Lucy was a totally independent mother of 2 running her own business. In November 2015, she developed a range of neurological symptoms which were totally debilitating, and resulted in a four month stay in hospital. Lucy now relies on a wheelchair to move around and is restricted to two rooms in her house. These rooms, once the family social space and a child's bedroom, now cater for all of Lucy's needs. The front room has now become a day room, social space, dining room, and occasional bedroom when guests stay. On occasion of leaving the house, Lucy is totally reliant on the assistance of other adults to go anywhere. Her condition has totally robbed Lucy of the independence she greatly valued, and have a serious impact on how the family functions. Even the simplest of jobs have become extremely complicated.
Lucy currently has a basic manual wheelchair which is OK for moving around the house, but which is too heavy and clumbersome for Lucy to use successfully outside. We have discovered a form of manual wheelchair which would enable Lucy to have some of her independence back. Whilst the frame itself is lightweight, very manouverable and supportive in a way that the current chair is not, it is the rear wheels that would make all the difference. These wheels are electric, acting a bit like an electric bicycle. They detect when the user touches the frame, and translate that into extra energy, meaning that every rotation of the wheels goes further. such wheels would enable Lucy to have more control over her life again. Jobs like taking the children to school, doing the shopping, and visiting the allotment (previously an important part of Lucy's life but now totally impossible) will become feasable again. Whilst also facilitating Lucy to go out, this wheelchair would also open Lucy's world, reducing the prison like nature of the two room existance, depression and other side effects that such a limited life can cause.
On Sunday 2nd October, Lucy along with friends and family, will be travelling along the Bath to Bristol cycle path to raise funds, a total distance of approximately 11 miles. Whilst Lucy will be pushed, it will be the furthest that she has travelled outside since becoming ill nearly a year ago. All funds raised will go towards the cost of the wheelchair. We are asking for your help, to sponsor Lucy, and / or to share this campaign.
