MEMORIAL TRIBUTE : for Frank Habart, beloved brother of Joyce Schwarz .
(Frank is pictured above far right with his Vegas cap on. He loved his family, his classic truck, his dog Buddy and life.)
It is with great honor that I am establishing a Memorial Fund for my brother Frank who passed today. We are planning a tribute to him for his many friends and colleagues. And we want to make a donation to the local Animal Welfare group in honor of his beloved dog Buddy.
PLEASE MAKE A DONATION OF ANY AMOUNT YOU CAN.
$10.00 will buy dog treats.
$25.00 will buy a big bag of dog food for the shelter.
$50.00 will pay for firewood for a bonfire at his life celebration.
$100.00 will buy some Bailey's (the only booze he drank occassionally) to toast at his tribute
$250.00 will pay for soda pop for the attendees.
$500.00 will pay for food for a barbecue at the event
$1000.00 will help pay for the loan he had on his beloved classic truck
BRAVEST MAN I KNOW:
Frank is the bravest man I know -- even after having all his toes amputated due to complications from Diabetes he would walk around the rehab chatting with patients and the nurses at their station. He never complained about his pain and the many operations and procedures.
LOVED VEGAS, HIS FAMILY, HIS DOG and HIS CLASSIC TRUCK:
Frank loved Las Vegas and made one final trip there last fall after one of his many operations on his feet. He loved driving the handicapped scooter around and meeting new people. Alas, he got kicked out of the hotel because his foot was bleeding too much. He managed to get home on Southwest who lost his suitcase containing his gifts for his family. But undeterred he wrote to Southwest and got a $100 credit even without the claim check. Frank loved his classic truck and driving around with his dog Buddy beside him.
ALWAYS ON THE GO:
Despite great physical, mental and emotional challenges he was always on-the-go. My brother was a character -until recently he had a fun goatee but shaved it off at the hospital. He was so excited to show me his clean-shaven face which indeed did make him look younger. He seemed to know everyone -- the neighbors and the local police were all his pals and he often did odd jobs for the autoshop down the street.
DAILY ROUTINE
One way he dealt with his disabilities is that he kept to what he called his daily routine and followed it up until he he was hospitalized. Up at 5 am, he would go to a nearby donut shop for coffee with the guys. After a quick nap he did his yard work and often spent the morning polishing his truck or stopping by to help another pal.
UNOFFICIAL GREETER AT DENNY's:
Late afternoon he often served as the unofficial greeter at a local Denny's. He'd park his classic truck, take out a camp chair and sit on the side path with his beloved dog Buddy. He'd drink his coffee and say hello to anyone who came into the store. Eccentric -- possibly-- but there was no one like Frank -- he truly lived life his way.
OVERCAME MAJOR OBSTACLES:
He overcame major learning disabilities and a speech impediment and was proud to work at General Motors for 8 years and raise his family of three children for 13 years (including a special needs daughter).
He had the energy to repaint his whole house in a weekend and then to invite people over for pizza or watermelon. Workwise he never stopped -- he worked later as a fast-food manager and earned his certificate to become a Security Guard at a local University.
He later set up FRANK'S HANDYMAN business and worked hard to employ others and always paid them on time even when his business was struggling. He didn't hesitate to go door to door to get business.
THE SCRAPPER: Most recently he loved being a Metal Scrapper -- he would bring home anything electronic -- TVs, Lamps, Washing Machines etc and then strip them for metal which he was proud to sell to supplement his disability insurance. In life he truly was a scrapper too -- he overcame many family and school challenges.
AS A KID: as a kid he had many friends and was very active building forts and treehouses and swimming like a fish. He loved to swim In his last months home, he wanted to join LA FITNESS so he could swim and set up a meetup group for singles at the club.
JOYCE AND FRANKIE: we shared a major bond -- me the smart one and him the learning disability kid. He never gave up. When we had to wait 2 hours in the snow of Cleveland to get a city bus to go to school or come back -- he'd tell me jokes and make me smile.
He liked my friends, my fiances and my ex-husband. He often told me my hair was beautiful. Almost every New Year's Eve for most of our lives we'd talk at the stroke of midnight via phone.
PLAYING CARS:
Raised in a housing project in Cleveland, we would play cars on turbulant nites that occurred either to the rumble of a storm outside or inside our house. He was my brother, my pal and my life challenge.
DEALING WITH LIFE: He was proud of me writing 7 books and he said one of his dreams was to be my chauffeur in a big limo when I became famous.
I heard him brag to a Maitre'd once when we stayed at a fancy Disneyland Hotel -- saying that I did not put on airs even though I had written books and been on TV and radio.
THE LAST YEAR: Many of you know these past few years have been amazingly challenging -- my mom passed just a few weeks after my beloved aunt. Frank was devoted to my mom despite so many obstacles. He and I both made peace with our father before he passed.
Frank was able to finally get a doctor to help adjust medicines just months before he died. Always mildly autistic he had physical, emotional and psychological difficulties that would have stopped others in their tracks.
BACK IN OHIO:
I made a decision to go back to Ohio for the past year. Despite initial conflict, I was pleased to spend many mornings with him at his house as he drank his protein shakes I ordered from Amazon or ate a slice of Pizza with me from Little Caesers.
I made him and his son a great meatloaf dinner and took him stuffed peppers to eat outside his house.
We shared a great evening with my fiance at a local Italian church festival when Frank could still walk (last summer) and he loved his Elephant Ear pastry and his stuffed cabbage and the $75 he won on instant bingo.
POEM TO FRANK: When I was 8 years old I had a poem published in the Cleveland newspaper -- sounds corny now; but Frank and I were/are corny people. Here it is:
MY BROTHER FRANKIE:
My brother's name is Frankie
And often he is very cranky
But I love him anyway
Every single day
Thank you for reading this and making a gift to the Frank Habart Memorial Fund.
