Shauna Alcorn hasn't added a story.
Thank you for taking a moment to read this. My name is Shauna, and my
partner Matt and I would very much appreciate any help you could give
on seeing that our cat Zissou makes it home alive. I just came back
from admitting him into the emergency vet hospital here in Winnipeg.
They diagnosed him with severe jaundice, and fatty liver
disease(Hepatic Steatosis). As I type they are currently hooking an IV
up to him, and a feeding tube to get him up to a healthy level to at
least eat on his own. (TLDR skip to the bottom paragraph).
How did this happen? Well we recently moved from an awful
apartment that was infested with mice(landlord threw bags of poison
everywhere as the solution), there was near constant dog barking from
the upstairs neighbours dog, and there was no safe outdoor space which
is something that he always loved. This was also where we introduced a
new cat into his living situation with my partner's cat Hat. Because
of the stress of moving to such a hostile place with so many changes,
Zissou started to eat to the point where his health, weight, mood, and
hygiene got quite dismal.
At our new place things seemed to turn around 180 degrees. We
switched him to a wet food diet. He got to go outside again. He was
loosing weight and grooming himself again, and seemed overall really
happy with the move. Now we knew he wasn't keen on wet food in
general, but figured he was eating something to be seeming so well.
Turns out with our attempt to change to a wet food diet, he was barely
eating any. If you have two cats it's hard to tell who eats what when
the dishes are empty in the AM. The last week he's been seemingly
lower energy, and this morning I was really concerned so I went and
got him dry food(his favourite), and he wouldn't eat or drink
anything. I really started to panic then, and syringe fed him some
water. We noticed he seemed yellow, and took him into the vet's
straight away.
The vet said that this is potentially fatal, so we want to do
all we can to make certain that's not the case. He will need to stay
in the hospital till he has the energy to feed himself. Which in the
hospital is around $300+ a day. That doesn't include his fluids, IV,
sonogram, electrolytes, and all sorts of unforeseeable further
treatments and complications. My estimate I got that'll take us till
tomorrow morning at 8am is $873.63 which I paid $455, and am expected
to pay the rest plus further costs when he leaves the hospital. The
vet said this could cost possibly $2000 if not more if he doesn't
respond to treatment right away. He's only six years old, and has a
lot more life to live. I wouldn't be asking for help if I thought it
was closer to his time, but he's usually an energetic, lovable,
affectionate fellow, with a lot more years to give. I love this little
man, and he's seen me through many a terrible time. Please help us to
allotted him the same courtesy in return.
