Attendance Matters is a program targeted at meeting the nutritional needs of our vulnerable students at 30 Surrey district schools.
The program ensures that identified students are provided with a nourishing morning meal that provides them with the necessary nutrition to prepare them for a day of learning ahead. This program intervenes early in at-risk students’ educational careers. Studies and our first-hand experience show that a wholesome warm morning meal is linked to improved concentration, increased energy, and an overall contributing factor to better success in school.
Administration, teachers and support workers at each complex school identify the vulnerable students that participate in Attendance Matters.
Breakfast includes a healthy assortment of nutritious options including but not limited to cereal, 2% milk, toast and jam, cheese, yogurt, eggs, fruit and vegetables.
Our goal remains to provide nutritious and enticing offerings, which in turn, encourage our learners to explore better/healthier food choices, and ultimately succeed at a higher rate in school.
These funds will help us reach more students in need across the district and to continue providing the critical food portion of this program, giving students the nutritious start to their day that will enable them to learn and focus on classroom work.
The Vancouver Sun Children’s Fund has been running our Adopt-a-School campaign for more than a decade now.
These past two years have been challenging and we know that the need for food security and other basic living necessities for many British Columbia children and their families is greater than ever.
We know that Vancouver Sun readers, who since 1981 have supported the fund’s charitable work and the programs that we provide to help needy children, will continue to help us improve this situation. We are grateful for that, and for the opportunity to make a difference.
Since our first Adopt-a-School campaign ran in 2011 we have disbursed more than $9 million to schools and community organizations in British Columbia. Your generous donations have supported tens of thousands of students each year.
When you donate to the Vancouver Sun Children's Fund, 100 per cent of your donation goes to to help children in need; there is no money taken from donations to cover administration costs.
