Lauren Enola Van Order hasn't added a story.
I hope this letter finds you in a time of excitement at the start of this new year. To me, 2015 is the year I will graduate from Denver School of Nursing (DSN), become a Registered Nurse, and score that coveted first RN job. It is also the year that I will travel to Haiti in conjunction with my nursing, which I have worked towards since before starting school. Therefore, I am thrilled to share with you the news that I was chosen to serve on a Global Health Perspectives (GHP) service learning internship to Haiti in March! This exciting internship partners with a non-profit called Love Takes Root (http://www.lovetakesroot.org/) which was started by a DSN faculty member, Barb Wilkerson, a pediatric nurse practioner, and her husband Dr. Rick Wilkerson. This internship/partnership with DSN over the last two years has been supported through generous donations from people like you. These donations have allowed a new orphanage to be built to replace the one that was destroyed by the earthquake in 2010. In continuing to provide aid to the entire community of Jacmel, a dental/medical clinic was built and my internship will be helping with the grand opening!
My internship will focus on transitioning the 50 Hatian orphans and providing clinical care for the orphans and surrounding community. I will also be scrubbing in to assist Dr. Wilkerson with surgery. As is the mission of Love Takes Root and GHP, sustainability is of utmost importance. Our goal is to empower the Haitian health care providers while teaching preventative health care practices in order to enable these families to thrive independently long after our departure. I am so grateful for this opportunity to contribute my nursing skills on a global level and would be deeply honored if you would partner with us to raise funds to help support the work of Love Takes Root- we can’t do it without you!
All funds for travel, medical and outreach supplies are due on February 1st! My goal is to raise $2000 before then. This money will cover the trip to Haiti and more importantly the medical supplies, equipment, and program support for the Haitian orphanage. Every dollar helps. Any money donated during (and after!) this time will be given straight to Love Takes Root, but the awesome part is that we get total allocating power of these funds, therefore all of our (yours and mine!) fundraising goes directly to my specific trip to Haiti; directly to those in need that I meet personally. For example during the last trip to Haiti, the interns used their funds to put glass windows in the orphanage which would have never been an option before. Extra funds are used to buy medications where the need continues to grow.
There are many ways to donate! Money can be donated on my page at Fundrazr.com via Credit/debit cards or PayPal. Checks can be made to me or to Love Takes Root with my name in the memo. I will gladly pick up donations personally or they can be sent to me at

I would love to keep you posted as I prepare for, attend, and return from this life changing experience. Let me know if I can include you in emails! Also, please email me any questions you may have.
Thank you so much for your thoughts, prayers, and donations.
