This is an un-edited letter from the director of this project. His name is Mathew Biryomumeisho and he is a young man dedicating all of his time and efforts into helping the children of his community to have the best start at life as possible, by giving them an education.
Thanks for loving our community.
Our school is found in Katungu community, Kabale district southwestern Uganda. It’s a mixed school for both boys and girls starting with 4years-14years. We currently have 120 children where by 70 are girls and 50 are boys and among these most are needy and others are orphans some are single orphans and other are double orphans. We are still registering more children so we expect to have about 188 children this year.
We appreciate your liking and we hopefully wish that u know more about us and we would also like to know more about you. We would love to share with you our living conditions and you also post your living conditions or you e-mail us and send us some pictures of children in Australia which I think our children would like to see how other children are living possible
Our community is found far deep in the remote area where we have no access to water which is our main problem before others. Our water source is about 3KM and the hill is very steep still its un fortunate the water source is Dirty because it’s a mare river flooding so we do trap the water flooding. We have got a big problem of water Born diseases as a result of using dirty water in both cooking and washing. It is unfortunate and saddening that most children will spend the whole week without bathing due to lack of enough power to fetch water for cooking and bathing. We appreciate the powers of well wishers for their contributions towards raising some money that we used to buy a small water tank that is a bit helping us…its very funny that we have the tank but still we have to fetch the water because we have to wait for the rain to fill the tank . Our climate is very funny and unpredictable because it can rain for one hour and after an hour it starts to shine as if it has never rained.
Our community is very welcoming! Community itself before people. On the way going to our community your welcomed with beautiful scenery, nice view of Kigezi hills and valleys. When we get to people it is at once an unforgettable community that one can key in his/her mind and can turn you back itself. Everyone is welcomed with local songs, dance {well known as KIKIGA DANCE}.People are welcoming respecting and most of all cooperative.
Our community children enjoy mountain hiking, playing foot ball, ladies skipping rope, swinging, playing drums, singing, but unfortunately our children they are born in rural area most of them they have never seen televisions they have never watched movies, everything they use to play its local and I think if they would watch like child Movie it can be a great surprise to them. It’s under our aim and target to get at least some of the media resource like computer, Televisions, phone, toys, and many other to at least open the minds of the children. We do not have electricity in our community so its also in our plan to get Solar power but that can be after getting some of the equipments that uses power. Due to lack of printers we encounter lots of expenses to print children exams and this sometimes leads to late doing of exams and some time if we don’t get finance to print, teachers use their hands to set exams which is tiresome and takes a lot of time. And all of the teachers are volunteers for us.
In Uganda it’s a chance to get a job so we are aiming on teaching our children basic skills such that after schooling they can be self employed. It’s annoying that most of the children in our community when they get to the age of 7years old their parents send them to work for rich people e.g, to graze cows, farming, fetching water, and doing other domestic works eg. Ladies become house maids and imagine it at the age of 7yrs. It has been also a big problem and highly increasing prostitute because due to poverty when young ladies get to age of 16 working as house maids rich men starts using them which has also increased spread of AIDs. Among our plans after construction of children school we would also like to start teaching youth and old parents how to read and write because in our community 15% knows how at least to write and 95% they know nothing which is a big problem hindering development in our community.
Please Help Katungu community!
