Welcome to TEAM EDMONTON's page for Walk for the Bu!
This is Korle-Bu Neuroscience Foundation's 12th annual Walkathon Fundraiser event that provides KBNF with the resources needed to continue to support and empower the development of neuroscience in Africa. I have been a part of KBNF since 2017 and love the heartbeat behind this organization and their mission.
This past year I have been particularly encouraged by the work that has been done and some of the opportunities that have come about for KBNF and the places where we have influence. In May of this year, we were able to send Liberia's neurosurgeon and his nursing assistant to Ghana for three weeks to train with neurosurgeon Dr. Harry Akoto and his team. They were filled up by all that they had seen and learned and were able to bring back new knowledge and skills to Liberia. In June of this year, we had the amazing opportunity of having some of our West African team members in Vancouver! Particular highlights for me were seeing the West African neurosurgeons present at Vancouver General Hospital Neurosurgery Grand Rounds (Alvin from Liberia even Zoomed in and presented) and partake in fruitful discussions about the global neurosurgery community and how relationships could be strengthened. We also hosted a gala event that saw new friendships formed and also felt like a real celebration for the work that is being done to strengthen neurosurgery in West Africa. As we look to next year, we are busy preparing for another surgical outreach to Liberia in February. God willing, I will head to Liberia in February (my fourth time here!) with the team and lead a small rehab team who will be a part of the post operative care of patients who receive surgery and also be involved in education initiatives. There is also much excitement as Liberia welcomes its second neurosurgeon to the country! Dr. Augustine Ballah has graduated in China just this month and will be returning as to serve his home country. Being in Liberia with two in country neurosurgeons will be a first for us!
I will be in Vancouver to partake in the actual walk on September the 23rd. None of this work is possible without the financial support of folks like you. Please j oin me in supporting Korle-Bu and the wonderful work that this organization is doing by donating! Every little bit makes a difference!
Lots of love, Kristina

Why participate?
We invite you to join us as we continue to impact thousands of lives in West Africa and continue to bring safe, compassionate care, surgeries, training, and medical equipment and supplies to those who need it most.
Each year, more than 5 million neurological patients around the world do not receive adequate care, resulting in otherwise avoidable disability and death.
KBNF works to change that.
In 2022:
- we shipped six containers of medical supplies and equipment to four countries
- new partnerships in Sierra Leone allowed for us to return after years of not being able to ship there.
- we distributed medical supplies and equipment to 30 clinics in Liberia
- During our surgical mission in November, 34 patients received surgery
- During that same mission, 66 nurses received 12 hours of direct, in-person training.
This year:
- we've already supported 30 clinics and medical facilities in Liberia
- we returned to Liberia in January with our US partner and conducted an additional 17 surgeries
- we've added The Gambia to our list of recipient countries and loaded a container headed for The Gambia in July.
Next year:
In February 2024, we are planning a multi-facility surgical outreach in Liberia so more patients can receive the life-changing surgery they wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise.
Partner with us. We cannot do it without your generous support.
Help us raise $100,000.
