Strong Island Animal Rescue League inc. hasn't added a story.
Our nonprofit animal rescue organization received a call from a local Long Island family. They had purchased an eight week old pitbull puppy from a “breeder” under the assumption the puppy was healthy. Unfortunately they received devastating news that their new family member Rocky has severe pulmonary stenosis. Without lifesaving surgery, estimated to hit at almost $8000, Rocky will only have a year to live. Not only is Rocky’s life depending on this, but the happiness of their families 4 year old daughter is as well. Strong Island offered that instead of this family surrendering their puppy to us, that we set up a fundraiser for them. We are hoping our supporters can help us keep the family together and healthy for many years to come
The family writes:
Im not sure where to begin, as I’ve been broken hearted, sitting here trying to gather my thoughts and absorb everything that has happened since December 22, 2020. My husband and I decided that we were going to get the ultimate Christmas gift for our four year old daughter who suffers from CAS. (Childhood apraxia of speech is a speech disorder in which a child’s brain has difficulty coordinating the complex oral movements needed to create sounds into syllables, syllables into words, and words into phrases.)
On December 22nd we decided to drive over eight hours to get our Christmas puppy Rocky. Rocky, an eight week old tri-color pitbull, with the cutest head, and floppiest ears and full of love took his journey back home to meet our daughter and join our family. A week of bonding, playing, and stealing our hearts…Rocky went to the vet, and that is when the nightmare began.
He was scheduled to go for his routine puppy shots and wellness check. We arrived at the vet and they came and took Rocky inside. The vet called us and told us that Rocky has both a grade 5 and grade 6 heart murmurs, which resulted in finding out Rocky has severe pulmonary stenosis. Three cardiologist later we found a vet that is willing to perform an operation on Rocky called a Pulmonary Balloon Valvuloplasty, where they go in and fix his heart. The cost of the procedure alone is $7500 and the doctor says if he makes it he will need to spend a few days in recovery and the daily cost of the hospital is $500.
This has to be one of the most awful situations I have ever been dealt. How am I suppose to make a decision of a life based on financial matters? The only thing stopping me from saving Rocky is not having the funds to be able to do it. Any contribution will help in this hard time, so I can help get Rocky the surgery he needs to live a happy dogs day.
