My name is Mike and I spent the first almost four years of my life growing up in Malawi. I have always felt a close connection and call to it. Because I thought it would be highly entertaining for all those who watch, I am doing 10 hours of plank over a 30 day period (20 minutes a day), inspired by Captain Tom Moore who walked 100 laps of his garden.

Today, Malawi is under great threat from the pandemic that could overwhelm the country. This is due to the limited resources the country has, with the ability to test just 20 people a day for the virus and has just 25 intensive care beds and seven ventilators fro a country of over 18 million (in the UK we has over 10,000 ventilators and 91,000 intensive care beds!). Rural health centres also have few drugs and limited supplies with many people not even having access to soap or running water. The weakening of immune systems due to many people having malaria, HIV or tuberculosis further intensifies an already dangerous situation.

According to Max Lawson, a policy advisor for Oxfam, “If Covid-19 gets in, it will spread rapidly across the country and many people will die. The health system is very weak.”

I'm raising money for Eagles which is a grassroots charity who have helped enable villagers to improve the quality of their own lives through growing better crops, raising livestock and starting small businesses. During this pandemic, they are playing a key role through the mobilisation of churches to respond in their areas in providing training about protection from the virus, providing some sanitation supplies, as well as teaching how to make soap. Through education of the threat of the virus to rural populations who are currently unaware, and through providing essential sanitation supplies, communities will be much better equipped and prepared to fight the virus than they currently are which will help prevent the unnecessary loss of life.

Please donate! Your contribution will make a crucial difference in the lives of those under the greatest threat from the virus, as well as the challenges they face daily. Thank you!
