Annabelle Nakabiri Ssebakijje hasn't added a story.
Sorita (not real name) is 13 yrs old. Her mom was 16yrs when she gave birth to her. She has never met her dad though he is expected to be alive. When Sorita's mom's parents learnt of her pregnancy, they chased her away from home. Sadly, as a young mum she had no were to go. She found her way to Nateete Slums with hopes of finding a job. There was no one willing to employ a pregnant teenager. There was no home to stay. The situation forced Sorita’s mum into sex trade. Even after she had given birth to Sorita, it was required of her to leave her baby in a group living shelter during the night to find customers. Sorita has grown up in the slum. At 13yrs, she has never been to school & can’t read or write. Her mom continued having several male partners because that’s the only way she knew how to survive. She got another 4 children BUT also contracted HIV/AIDS.
The Remnant Generation team met
Sorita during a community outreach program in January 2018. She asked
for an opportunity to join the School of Purpose; she wanted to learn
how to read, write and to obtain a skill in hairdressing. Her big
dream is to work hard, enroll into formal school and study to become a
nurse so that she can know what’s wrong with her mum. You see,
Sorita’s mum has not opened up to her children about her HIV/AIDS
status. She is worried that her children will know she is dying
anytime. The children believe their mother is suffering from a strange
disease that is related to witchcraft.
Two weeks ago it started
raining heavily. The slums are flooding & Sorita has been missing
school. Today we decided to pay a visit to her home. It is
unbelievable what we found. Sorita’s mum is very ill & can hardly
move out of her bed. She has a very bad cough too. We noticed that all
the children are also coughing. They stay in one of the rooms of a
dilapidated house that was dumped because it was sinking. This house
is surrounded by garbage, stagnant water & a filled latrine. The
stench in and around this room is difficult for a weak nose to handle.
Inside the house are one very old bed & an overused mattress. The
children have piled up bricks to make a second bedlike structure but
when the waters come in, they have to stay awake all night. They have
to find dry soil to fill into the room to try & keep the ground
dry. It’s evident that there is no hope for a lunch meal today. These
children and their sick mum go for days without food.
Sorita is
the oldest. She is at a very high risk of dropping out of school to
nurse her ailing mother while finding means of taking care of her
3siblings including a 5months old baby. But without support, how will
she even afford to do this? What kind of future will she lead if she
drops out of school? These children need their mom alive. She is the
only existing support system they got.
