My ex husband, best friend, and also the man my children called "Dad", Joel Buchanan, lost his long battle with mental illness, committing suicide just weeks ago. His very complex struggle made for a very complex relationship. One thing is certain, the four of us cared deeply for each other, and loved each other very much. The last 6 years have been as beautiful as they have been painful...and they were very much both.

The complexity of our struggle caused for periods of homelessness and a very unstable life for us all. My children, Stella and Ikey were very aware of their dad's condition, and it affected every aspect of their lives. The kids and I were devastated by this loss, but at the same time relieved that Joel would finally be at peace, and that we would finally have a point to put the pain behind us and start healing...

Last night our car was broken into and ransacked. The back window was broken, and Ikey's inexpensive phone was stolen. The children were very traumatised by this. Partly because over the years our vehicle has been our only safe space. Currently living in a confidential domestic violence shelter, now is no exception.

I would like to raise enough to get the window replaced, get an oil change, and throw a party for Ikey's upcoming birthday. His dad used to take us all out to do something special, since we have never had our own place where the kids could have parties...neither of the kids has ever even had a sleepover with a school friend, or a playdate for that matter.

Please help us on the road to healing. Anything helps, but please do not donate if you are financially struggling yourself. Trust me, your emotional support is appreciated more than you know.
