Yeasts are single-celled microorganisms that are categorized under the kingdom fungi. Since these are commonly found in the environment, humans naturally carry a controlled number of yeast organisms in the body, especially in moist areas such as the mouth, intestines, and vagina. If, however, there are conditions that cause changes in the environment, yeast reproduction may be accelerated, which, in turn, may cause yeast overgrowth and ultimately infection.
Yeast infection in women is usually caused by the proliferation of the fungus known as Candida albicans. It is estimated that as much as 75 per cent of all women have or have had a problem with yeast infections at some point in their lives. The treatment of yeast infection usually includes anti-fungal medications, although management may also involve boosting the immune system and controlling the factors that trigger its development.
Many women who seek treatment of yeast infection typically resort to over-the-counter anti-fungal medicines available in local drug stores. However, if you want to make sure you're getting the right topical medicine, you can schedule a medical appointment on your smartphone .
Below are some of the most common medications used by women with yeast infection:
- Oral agents: fluconazole (Diflucan), itraconazole (Sporanox), ketoconazole (Nizoral)
- Vaginal agents: clotrimazole (Mycelex, Gyne-Lotrimin, FemCare), nystatin (Mycostatin), butoconazole (Femstat), miconazole (Monistat-7, Femizol-M), terconazole (Terazol), tioconazole (Vagistat-1)
The oral or vaginal drug of choice depends on a variety of factors such as the severity of the infection, frequency of the infection (that is, if it is recurrent), and the individual's medical history (for example, pregnancy, diabetes, HIV). Some treatment regimens may include a combination of an oral agent followed by application of a vaginal cream or suppository. Severe or recurrent infections, meanwhile, may require a more serious treatment that involves the intake of maintenance medications. Maintenance treatments are taken periodically, usually once a week, or as prescribed by the doctor, which is why it's necessary to talk to a doctor online now if you think you might have it.
While it is generally safe to treat mild to moderate yeast infections with medicated creams, ointments, tablets, or suppositories, it is very important to first see the doctor if:
- You have never been diagnosed with a yeast infection
- You are pregnant
- The infection won't go away after taking a full course of medication
- You are experiencing repeated infections
Any woman who experiences symptoms of a yeast infection for the first time should consult a doctor or talk to a nurse so she can be sure that her vaginal discomfort is caused by yeast and not by sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, Chlamydia, or trichomoniasis. As a general rule of thumb, a pregnant woman should always consult a doctor before taking any kind of medication.
Studies reveal that about two thirds of women who buy over-the-counter anti-fungal products do not really have a yeast infection. Please note that using these products incorrectly may lead to an infection that is extremely hard to treat and may only make matters worse. This is why you need to learn more about the condition through a consultation with a doctor before you take or use anything to treat it.
