Joy van Straalen hasn't added a story.
Hello everyone!
My name is Joy and i've been in a relationship with an amazing girl for over two years now.
Her name is Naomi.
She's a bubbly, smart and beautiful 21 year old from Amsterdam.
Naomi always wants to help and stand up for others.
Being the activist that she is, she fights for disability, LGBTQI+ and homeless rights.
We met volunteering as LGBT youth counselors back in 2015.
Her drive to help others was one of the reasons i fell in love with her
Helping others brought us together and now I'm here to ask others for help.
Naomi has always experienced pain through out her young life, but doctors never really found an answer.
They thought she was a hypocondriac or just exaggerating, so some even misdiagnosed her with several mental disorders.
Up until two years ago, after many visits to several physicians, they never seemed to connect her symptoms to a physical condition.
During the course of our first year together, Naomi's health worsened rapidly.
She went from walking carelessly in heels, going to school or dancing the night away to taking unprescribed painkillers, using a walker and wearing arm and anklebraces on a daily basis.
Naomi was diagnosed with EDS, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in late december 2016.
EDS is a connective tissue disorder that's caused by defects in a protein called collagen and has many forms and types.
Naomi has the hypermobility type, which causes all her joints to dislocate or subluxate very easily, chronic pain, chronic fatigue and other symptoms like autonomic nervous system disfunctions.
Naomi misses her mobility, her freedom.
She often tells me she misses the old her, the independent girl she once was.
She's a fighter and one of the strongest people i've ever met, but losing a huge part of your independence and mobility takes a toll.
I wish I could do more for her, but there's only so much I can do.
We've recently purchased a wheelchair, but it's not fully suitable for her.
Unfortunately it doesn't give her the support she needs when it comes to being mobile, not to mention independent.
Naomi's illness is progressive and because it's not clear where it's heading, I hope to raise enough money for better assistive devices.
Due to the fact that the insurance isn't always covering every
cost and suitable wheelchairs are quite expensive, I hope to raise
money for a better wheelchair and maybe more assistive devices like
a adjustable bed so she can take back her independence and be
happier with life and herself!
A lot of places aren't fully accessable, which makes her feel
even more dependent of others and more of a burden.
With your support, I hope we can change that.
Thank you all for reading and I hope you can support us to achieve a
more accessable future for Naomi so she can follow her passion to help
others without boundaries!
Please share Naomi's story!
Much love,
Joy.

Hallo iedereen!
Haar naam is Naomi.
Wij leerden elkaar
kennen in 2015, toen wij beiden werkten als LHBT
jongerenbegeleiders.
Naomi's gezondheid verergerde vrij snel tijdens ons eerste jaar
samen.
Naomi mist haar mobiliteit, haar vrijheid.
was.
Alsjeblieft deel Naomi's verhaal!
Veel liefs,
Joy.
