I have lived in the Barton Heights area of Richmond, VA for over
20yrs and when we first moved into our house the crime rate in
Richmond was pretty bad, and the headlines were never good.
I like to garden, and created a small share garden in the front yard a few years ago, and some of my neighbors told me about this brilliant young man who had opened up a warehouse at the end of our city park where they had a community garden and taught about hydroponic farming and urban gardening.
I
had the privildege of being shown around Createspace and meeting it's
creator/director, Mr. Arthur Kay, near the end of March of this year.
Soon after, my wife and I took a workshop on working with bamboo and
making trellises for the newly sprouted peas in the beautiful garden.
We missed the worshop on making raised beds from old pallets, but I
was fortunate to get in on the vermicomposing workshop.
I have now had the opportunity to have been involved with Createspace for about 8 months, and I have watched many, many young people come through the doors of this old warehouse, and get inspired about growing plants in dirt and hydroponically, making pottery, learning engineering with Legos, computer animation, and so many other things. I have been able to help and watch people with ideas and abilities move into a space that they can afford and explore their possiblities while helping each other explore theirs.
I am asking for all friends of our future, to make a tax deductible contribution to Createspace towards the expansion and renovation of areas to house more creative minds with a desire to inspire and teach our children STEAM, science, technology, engineering, art, & math.

What do we already do?
Monthly
workshops for youth to adults in topics that range from Conservation
Landscaping to Hydroponics, Vermicompost, and Music Production to name
a few.
This
past year work with youth in a variety of afterschool enrichment and
summer camps, including Ceramics, Animation, Painting, and Maker Camp.
In the future we plan to continue our partnership with Richmond Parks
and Rec. to offer after school enrichment for RPS youth.
We have a community of web
& graphic designers in the co-working space. Newcomers are welcome
and its never too late to learn! Someone will always there be there to
lend you a hand.
We
provide affordable and accessible studio space. We offer competitive
prices and a convenient location. Many of our artist residents live in
the neighborhood or nearby.
A small tool library with hand tools including saws, drills, nails,
screws, angle grinder, staple gun, calk gun, vice grips, respirators
& more. This fundraiser will help us renovate our community shop
space and expand our tool library to include welding equipment and
other larger tools.
What is the fundraiser for?
$5,000 - will double the quantity of studios from 10
to 20 by expanding our footprint in the building, and renovating the
space there.
$5,000 - will go to improving our shared space
including, getting tools & equipment for you to use anytime, and
fresh paint & murals on the walls we desperately need ;)
$3,000 - will go to expand our commercial kitchen to
provide kitchen space for Food Not Bombs and food start-ups.
$2,000 - will allow wiggle room in our budget for
perk fulfillment and help us to increase the depth and frequency of
our workshops, classes, and events.
