Florida Dachshund Rescue hasn't added a story.
On Saturday, August 20, Florida Dachshund Rescue got a call from a vet in the Panhandle about an 8 year old Dachshund that was attacked by a bear in June 2016. The 2 children in his family let the Dachshund out at night to potty. The Dachshund saw a bear in their rural backyard. He ran barking at the bear to protect the children. The bear growled and swiped at the Dachshund and knocked him across the yard, hurting his back and leaving him severely wounded. Luckily the children were able to pick up the Dachshund and run back into the house. After that, the bear went to the front of the house and attacked the owner's car.
The owners took the Dachshund to the vet. His back was severely injured, maybe broken, he had open wounds and gashes from the bear attack, he could not walk and he could not control his bladder and bowels. His owners could not afford his surgery, so his injuries were stitched and stapled, then they took him home with medications and tried crate rest.
After 2 months, the Dachshund did not get better, so the owners decided they could no longer handle the Dachshund's care and decided to euthanize him. :'(
Luckily, the vet decided to call Florida Dachshund Rescue to see if we would rescue the Dachshund and we said YES! The vet tech drove the Dachshund over 3 hours to one of our foster homes. He was then transported to our wonderful neuro vet, Dr. Hay of Veterinary Surgical Specialists in Tampa.
Unfortunately, after a careful examination, it was determined that it was too late for the Dachshund to have surgical correction for his back to help him walk again. Dr. Hay did suggest checking into Stem Cell Therapy.
FLDR has renamed the Dachshund, Bernard, nickname Bernie. Bernard is of West Germanic origin, meaning as "strong or brave as a bear". He is now being fostered in Winter Park, FL.
We have made an appointment for a consultation for Stem Cell Therapy, will be doing physical therapy, getting Bernie a cart and any other medical care to help him live a full and happy life.
Anything you can donate is greatly appreciated. We can't save dogs like Bernie without funds from our supporters.
Please share, cross-post and help us get the word out about him.
If you don't want to donate through FundRazr, you can send a check made out to Florida Dachshund Rescue for "Bernie" to:

Thank you in advance for your help!
Any funds raised that are not used for Bernie will be used for other Dachshunds in need with Florida Dachshund Rescue.
