Cammy Barnett hasn't added a story.
Jonah is 8 years old, and has an incurable autoimmune disease.
We are raising money for an alert dog to keep him safe! At the age of five, Jonah was diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease. He wears an electronic external organ to help keep him alive. I have to monitor his blood levels a dozen times a day and make adjustments to his medication to keep him alive. His blood levels fluctuate so quickly that I couldn’t possibly check his blood enough times in a day to keep him in a safe range all the time.
Everything affects his blood levels. What he eats. How much medicine we give him. If he is losing or getting teeth. How much water he is or isn't drinking. What the weather is like. If he has a stomach bug. If he is feeling anxious. If he is excited. Whether he is well rested. How much he ran around yesterday, today, and within the last hour. If he has a cold. If he is concentrating extra hard on something. The list is literally endless. I try the best I can, but in reality, it is an impossible challenge.
I am raising money to purchase a highly trained dog that can alert me to rapid changes in Jonah's chemistry. These dogs are very expensive, but I am hopeful with all of the love and support that we have been shown that we can raise the money that we need.
What does Jonah HAVE?
I hate to even answer when people ask, because when I say the name, people look relieved. Because HALF A BILLION people have a disease with a very similar name, people think they know all about what my son has. They think it's not a big deal. That I could have prevented it, and that I can cure it. They think his levels are all over the place because I am doing a poor job taking care of him. They think if I would just feed him better foods that I could cure him. But my son does not have this disease. He has a different disease, which only a few million people in the world have. One that is INCURABLE. One that Jonah will live with for the rest of his life unless a cure is found.
It is called Brittle IDDM, Volatile Autoimmune Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, commonly known as "type one diabetes" Are you surprised? Please look up the differences between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. One in 20 people who have type 1 diabetes pass away from low blood sugar. As I type this, Jonah has had 14 low blood sugar episodes in the last two weeks alone. Doctors recommend checking his blood sugar 6-8 times a day. Our current average is 15. His blood sugar drops and rises so quickly!
I can't check him enough times in a day to keep him safe on my own. We need the help of a furry best friend to watch over him and alert me when Jonah's levels are going crazy between checks.
There is so much I could type here, but I would love to have you visit Jonah's Facebook page and ask any questions that you may have. Thank you!

Update: I have been asked what I will do if we both don't raise our goal and if we raise more than our goal. If we don't meet our goal we will keep doing other fundraisers! If we exceed our goal, the money will go towards Jonah's medical expenses, and we would love to bless others who need a dog as well. Through our support group, we know numerous families who are trying to fundraise for an alert dog for their young children.
