Karen (Chu's) Angels hasn't added a story.
Recognize this spot? It's the picnic site in Stanley Park where ICC usually holds Walk the Wall. I came across this picture while visiting my sister in Kelowna over the September long weekend. My sister, Kathleen, is the 17 year old on the right holding two kids with special needs. She was working at Woodlands during the summer of 1978 and this was a fieldtrip.
Woodlands was a hospital in New Westminster that served as a psychiatric hospital and later as a facility for children with a developmental disorder, as well as runaways and wards of the state. Woodlands opened in 1878 as the Provincial Lunatic Asylum. In 1897 the name was changed to The Provincial Hospital for the Insane. In 1950 the name was changed again to Woodlands School. Woodlands closed in 1996.
Right here in our own backyard, children with disabilities were institutionalized and it only closed 24 years ago.
I was 7 years old when this picture was taken. It's astounding to me how much has changed in our society's thinking when it comes to people living with disabilities just in my lifetime.
Change is possible. It's possible here and it's also possible in China. A place where children are still institutionalized.
ICC is the voice for children living with disabilities in China rising up and saying, "These lives matter!" Our staff in China say it loud and clear every day as they speak life to the children and young adults in our care. Our staff that come alongside parents who have chosen not to abandon their child say it by showing up and giving those parents the support and encouragement they need.
I've been saying it for the last 15 years as I've worked as the administrator for ICC in Canada and I'll be saying it again as I walk at this event. You can say it by walking with me or supporting ICC financially.
My personal goal is $5,000. I'd really appreciate any help you are willing to give.
Sincerely,
Karen

Join the Global movement and help give life and end abandonment
Walk the Wall is a global movement that brings people together each year to raise money for abandoned and disabled children and young adults in China, as well as families raising children with disabilities so that abandonment isn’t their only option.
Since 2007, supporters around the world have walked thousands of kilometres, figuratively covering the Great Wall of China’s 21,196 km many times over. Each dollar raised will help abandoned children and young adults in China overcome the many challenges they face. If you'd like to know more about ICC, please visit our website.
