Wallis McMillin hasn't added a story.
Have you ever been walking along, living your sweet life in peace when all of a sudden that peace was interrupted by a piercing cackle laugh provided by yours truly? Has it ever sent you into a rage, one that could drive you to violence and want to slug me in the face? Do you hold back because that would be illegal and against your morals? Well you're in luck! Once again, you have the opportunity to donate money to a great cause (within your morals!) and see me get clocked at the same time.
For the third year in a row I'm participating in Eastside Boxing's Aprons for Gloves, a charity boxing event that gets me in shape, helps raise money for youth on the downtown Eastside and will almost guarantee me getting a bloody nose at some point. This year I'm repping DiBeppe, an Italian restaurant that's guaranteed load me with carbs and make it nearly impossible for me to cut weight, despite how hard I try. Regardless, my past experiences with AFG have been nothing short of amazing. I was relatively new to the restaurant industry when I started Aprons in 2017 and through the program I met tons of other servers, chefs, bartenders and other professionals that introduced me to a bunch of new restaurants, amazing food and more incredible people. The community that runs out of AFG is an incredible example of hard working industry people coming together to help the neighbourhood that we live and work in.
The minimum fundraising goal for AFG is $2000 but I'm hoping to exceed that number and go as high as I can. If the minimum is met and training goes well, I'm eligible to be paired against another woman in my weight class to fight head to head at the Commodore Ballroom on August 20th in front of an uncomfortable amount of people. With 1 win to my name and several sparring losses, I'm hoping you can help me achieve my goal and see the ridiculous flinch I wear on my face while I fight, in person. I'm asking for your support to help me raise this money for a cause I have seen first hand is working, and to support a gym that reminds me why Vancouver's restaurant community is so strong, and reminds me why I love it.
Founded in 2012, Aprons for Gloves Boxing Association is a non-profit organization focused on providing community outreach through the sport of boxing. Based in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, the organization was developed by a small group of professionals and entrepreneurs who seized an opportunity to re-establish a historic boxing program for at-risk women and youth. The program offers free mentorship and training to individuals who may otherwise not have the resources or support to participate in such activities. The sport of boxing teaches discipline, respect, hard work and self-control. Training results in positive self-esteem, good health and camaraderie for its practitioners.
Restaurant Rumble 2019
Every year bartenders, chefs, dishwaters, servers, baristas and all sorts of individuals from the Gastown community get together to train at the Eastside Boxing Club to fight in Restaurant Rumble.
In order to attend training, each fighter is required to raise
$2000 for charity before they can compete at the Rumble.
