Meet Lucy aka Harley~

"I have recently discovered on the base a section where “pests” are housed until they are either returned to the wild or euthanized for being a threat... not pets. Pests tend to be wild animals that wander onto the base.  Sometimes stray dogs end up there. I learned that there was a puppy contained in the Pest Control section and she was going to be euthanized in several weeks if someone did not step in to help her.

When back in the states, my world revolves around dogs. As a pilot, I have personally provided rescue flights for over 50 dogs to get them out of kill shelters. I share my life with two dogs, both who came to me as strays. We found my boy Enzo under a bridge over 8 years ago, matted and sickly, on his last legs. My wife and I nursed him back to health and he stole my heart. Then 4 years ago, we saved Piper from euthanasia days before she was going to be put down. Piper was a feral street dog from North Carolina sent to animal control. It took us many months, years, really, to help Piper understand what it is to be part of a family.  She was a tremendous challenge in every way.  If you saw her today, you would have no idea how broken she was when first brought her home.

Since I discovered little "Lucy”, I now hike 3 miles each day to visit her.  I can see in her eyes that she wants to be loved. It breaks my heart to see her sleeping on rocks in the cold each night. The base is not equipped to house pets. This is a military base, not an animal shelter.  Finding her here has given me something positive to look forward to after long hard days of work. Visits with her bring me some peace in a difficult place, while away from my family.

For a long time now, I have been wanting to rescue another dog but something told me to wait. I wasn’t sure what I was waiting for until now.  As soon as I saw "Lucy” and once I understood she was in danger, it was clear what I needed to do. I was waiting for her to find me. I understand she is a young feral dog and she may come with problems that most families may not be able to handle. But there is one thing I know to be true, my wife and I are more than prepared. Piper was from the street and she trained us for this. We have done this before and we are willing and able to do it again. We want nothing more than to save this little girl from death’s door and elevate her from stray desert dog to family member. We want to give her a life where she sleeps on a soft warm bed, not on rocks. We want feed her good food and give her healthcare. We want to teach her what it means to be loved and what it feels like to be safe. I hope we can make this happen. "
