Jessica Hutchinson hasn't added a story.
Hi, we’re the unintentional comedy duo Jessica and Darryl. You probably don’t know us, but if we look familiar it’s because we probably are.
Jess is a sassy Labrador in a human body. She’s also an actor, writer, filmmaker and emerging game producer.
Darryl is better recognised by his online handle – the Tabletop
Owlbear. He looks like a Muppet, acts like a Muppet, and after
centuries of being a professional boardgame hoarder he is now dipping
his toes into the
world of boardgame design.
Together we have adventures that make life meaningful, while supporting and helping other creative people achieve their dreams. Jess volunteers time to coach filmmakers, and Darryl backs and promotes board games made within the indie community.
This year we’re about to embark on one of our biggest adventures yet. The thing is - we need some help.
We want to take things up a significant notch. Like a person looking at a belt that’s too big, we’ve got a knife and we’re ready to make some new holes. In this example, holes are positive actions that will move us forward into the next stages of our careers. Don’t ask about the knife.
We have been fortunate to make great friends and professional
connections in the US over the last few years. Jess wants to work in
the US with her acting/writing/human Labrador skills, and Darryl wants
to venture
deeper into design within the games industry. The
ground-work has been laid.
Our 2018 goals: Jess will meet with managers and/or agencies that can represent her interests in LA and beyond, including meetings with video game publishers to partner on her project. Darryl will bring his boardgame prototype to publishers with the hope of selling his design, and develop his networks further. We can also return to Gen Con to be your favourite volunteer booth nerds for Syrinscape.
Why can't we fund this trip ourselves? Both of us have had recent, personal roadblocks that have done a really, really good job of derailing our efforts and dreams. For example, we had four deaths in the family in just three weeks last October. Yup. Severe Anxiety and Depression? You bet. PTSD? Tick. Sleep deprivation? Sorry, what is sleep?
The flow-on from life kicking our balls in just the last 12 months alone have created financial issues that have made it difficult to move forward on the next steps of our goals - resulting in major impacts to health and family, as well as extended unpaid medical leave from work.
At the start of January we said this year would be different – just like everybody else does (the fools). Except, so far, it has been. It has been incredibly positive, energising and serendipitous. We want to keep that good mojo flowing, to take it with us throughout the rest of the year and kick 2018 in the pants. This is the year for big changes.
Wanna help?
Your help will help us fund flights to the USA - both international and domestic. Flights currently stand at around $3,000-ish for the two of us.
Your support will also help cover the cost of food/accommodation/incidentals while we travel, and more importantly, care for the fur kids while we are away. Kennelling dogs for approximately 3 weeks is not cheap, and we are doing our best to investigate the best option possible (to ensure they are well looked after and that we don’t have to pay with our kidneys).
If you got this far – thank you for reading Jess’ ridiculously long essay. And thank you for your help.
***If we can't raise the full amount we're seeking (which, despite the cost, is unfortunately the minimum amount we need) then all money donated to this campaign will be given to Herd 2 Homes. Our puppies Stormie and Nyx came from this wonderful organisation, and we will gladly give them our support if we can't make our dreams come true. And if we get over our goal, all monies received thereafter will go to Herd 2 Homes (that way everyone wins!) http://www.herd2homes.com.au/
